>>3221553yeah, and I shoot a Blad and Rollei, I know all about square format. Square is beautiful but almost every major paper size (5x7, 8x10, 11x14, 20x24) and corresponding frame size is pretty much 4:3. So you either crop, cut a mat to fit a square into rectangular frame, or custom frame.
>>3220901yes and defiantly no
6x6 cropped to a 4:3 ratio will use the same amount of neg as 645 while allowing you to compose tighter after the fact. Alternately you can compose full frame at a 1:1 ratio and print on a smaller section of the paper, ie 8x8, 7x7, or 6x6 on a 8x10 paper, depending on desired borders.
6x6 is the perfect medium format to me because it is a compromise. 645 is a glorified 35mm, while 6x7 and 6x9 get bulky and move into pretend LF territory, for example the Mamiya BR and RZ has all the bulk and few benefits over a 4x5 field camera.
my opinion of MF (and I am a MF shooter), is that it is hands down a compromise, more than any other format, no matter what system you go for. 35mm nicaon can be customized to any shooting style, LF is either Field Camera or Rail Camera with a lot of cross over in capability, but MF is very specific to shooting style and format
