Tips for shooting black birds would be: overcast = good, and if it's backlit at all, don't bother unless you have an interesting enough subject for a silhouette. Notice how I positioned myself so there was a bit of greenery behind them to avoid this. Can't tell you how many shots I've missed doing this, but it's always worth the effort especially with black birds.
I keep meaning to get some nice shots because they make great subjects... always attacking other birds and doing weird stuff. I should really put in some effort soon. Usually I just watch and listen, because they are pretty entertaining.
