I've always been taking some cool photos with my phone. But I'm about to buy a DSLR, and I have no idea of how to use it properly.
I borrowed my friend's D5300 and took some pictures, but they are not perfect.

What are some good books or videos for starting photographers?

1st, you have to realize you are shit. Everyone starting out is. Don't expect complements and don't take anything personal. Just practice none stop. Before you know it you'll have your own style and be better than before

main first DSLR or camera tip: click everything until you find yourself.
The D5300 is a very nice starter camera and you won't be let down.

shoot more. Try to find some good photographers on instagram, flickr, 500px or take a time at some library photography session. There are many names and I can't say which one would be the best for you atm since you're shooting pretty much everything

youtube has some good photographers explaining their process too
