Hi guys !
I have a Leica R8, and would like to sell it for a fully mechanic leica.
Because I have the box and stuffs and a Leica lens (elmar tho), I know I can sell it a good price.

I would like to buy a fully mechanic camera which are, for me easier to repair than an R8. (it it true for you ?)
Which model would you recommend ? Fed 4 -YOLO- or leica ? Carl Zeiss/voigtlander or a good elmar ? Leica III ou M3 ?

inb4, yeah, leica fag, but seriously, if you know another silent camera, I would love to know.

Fuji X-T1 has an electronic shutter mode where there's basically no sound at all. Makes a cloth-shutter mechanical camera sound like a machine gun. It’s digital, though; not sure if that’s a dealbreaker for you.

A Konica hexxar is a great alternative with amazing glass for far less money. Also, if you total the body or lense or it gets stolen it will be less of a pain in the ass to deal with.

Depends if you want a rangefinder or a SLR. If you want a Leica SLR then the R6 is a good choice but it's not silent, just like any other mechanical SLR.

If you want a rangefinder then just get the cheapest leica M you can find, M2s and M4s are cheap.

And lenses, well,it depends. Voigtlander and zeiss are good, what focal length do you like?

pretty expensive... You want to stick with Leica, right? Because it could be a good option a Bessa or a Contax for you. You won't be dropping quality, actually I would imagine you would improve it! But you would lost the 'red dot'.

I'm looking forward a Leica R4 atm because I'm used to the SLR.

would avoid contax, early leicas and russian rfs since they all have shitty vf/rf and messy loading mechanism

I was thinking of early leica like contax

G2 is supposedly good but I have never put my hands on one
lenses are probably GOAT since it's modern zeiss glass and really short flange distance

btw get a minolta cle/leica cl/leitz minolta cl they're all the same camera but from looking at ebay prices the leitz minolta cl is the cheapest of the bunch

M6 has a lightmeter, the others dont.
It's not needed if you learn to read the light.
If you want a cheap 35 I would recomend the Zeiss C-Biogon 35 2.8. If you can spend more money then a 35mm summicron (around 1000€)

What about Kiev?

They have a rolling metal shutter that I find quieter than even rubber cloth ones. Or at least as quiet, with a different (hssst) sound.

The Helios 103 (53mm f/1.8) is a very good and modern lens that costs fuckall. Much better than the Jupiters and whatnot, even the old f/2 Zeiss Sonnars.

For around $50-70 you can get a Kiev 4 with a Helios or Jupiter lens. Then, since the contax rf mount is dead and the lenses (especially the 50mm ones) not adaptable, many of those lenses can be had for cheap. The Jupiter 12 is a nice 35mm f/2.8 Biogon design, rear element almost touching the shutter. The Jupiter 9 is a short tele, 85mm f/2, with great bokeh as a sonnar design. Very good portrait lens, available for ~$80.

If you're feeling fancy, you can even get a proper Contaz IIa, with the f/1.5 Sonnar, for less than $300.

Also, Voigtlander released some modern lenses in contax mount around 2000, there's a nice 21mm color skopar for $250 on ebay rn.

If you decide to go m-mount, Zeiss and voigtlander lenses are great. Also an M3 is much more practical than a III.

It's actually an Acmel-MX which does take the 8x11 Minox film. Haven't used it yet, I do have 2 rolls of film for it but really can't justify shooting them. Kinda wanna keep it as a collectors piece since I have the box any everything but at the same time it would be cool to use.

Do not buy anything Russian, even the best russian camera can't compete with the worst japanese cameras

zorkis, feds and kievs are hardly a step up from toy cameras

true
on the other hand, why would anyone buy a barnack leica if not for collecting is beyond me

btw there are many fixed lens rf with outstanding lenses (both 35mm, 40mm and 50mm) that go for under 100 dollars such as yashica 35cc and konica s3
way better choice than russian rf if you want it cheap

They’re film cameras, their only function is to be light-tight boxes with a shutter and a rangefinder. And they do that perfectly fine.

If you want better quality just stick a better lens in front of them.

True about the Japanese RFs. I have a Konica Auto S3 and an Olympus 35 SP. great lenses, great finders, and very quiet leaf shutters that sync at all speeds.
But they’re really complicated and flimsy if you open them up. Almost unfoxable if something goes wrong. If you take a look inside, they’re a maze of hair-thin springs and wires, and more gears and interlinks than a mechanical watch.

(Fortunately they don’t break down often).

With Russian RFs you make a compromise: you lose viewfinder quality and small size, to get an *interchangable lens* camera that can be fixed ad infinitum when something goes wrong.
And also if you get a Leica mount one, you can put any good Leica/Zeus’s/Voigtländer lens in front of it.
