I’ve recently moved to an area that doesn’t have a local or specialized store that will process and scan my film for me. How would I go about scanning my film after processing it at Costco for instance. Should I buy a scanner or should I buy a camera and a macro lens? Can someone explain to me the benefits of each and their downfalls? I’ve been accumulating a lot of rolls lately and I don’t know what to do.

A little pricey, but they will send you scans too.

Easiest way to scan is by backlighting the negatives (with a light pad or tablet set to white) and taking pictures with a macro lens on a dslr.

I only shoot 35 and do my own dev and scanning. Scanning is pretty annoying with a macro lens, it's quite finnicky to get perfect alignment, flat film, perfect sharpness etc etc. Assuming you have a modern APSC or full frame camera, you're going to get really good scans when compared to a flatbed.

If you get used to doing the camera scanning setup you can get faster scans than you can with a flatbed. You don't need to wait over a minute per image.

I think the process is the biggest difference between the two options. A nice macro scanning setup is going to be pretty similar in price to a nice flatbed setup. A budget macro scanning setup is far cheaper though, I spent 120 euro on it and that's all I'm putting in.

Camera scanning (when setup well) will blow any affordable scanner out of the water. IF you already own a good digital camera OR plan to buy one for digital shooting, don't buy a film scanner.

Gunna shoot some Ektachrome Elite 200 on some scuba dives this week. Figured if it's magenta casted (iffy storage) it'll balance out the blue tint of the water (similar to simply using a red filter).

now imo
if you already own a digital camera AND are shooting mostly 35mm, there's no need to get a scanner
just look for the best corner-to-corner sharp lens you can afford and follow the steps on the site above

however, if you're shooting mf or lf, I'd highly recommend getting a flatbed scanner, which easily goes cheap these days
the reasons are that 1) the frame is larger, so harder to keep flat, and 2) harder to get even back lightning, and 3) you lose lots of resolution due to different crop ratio from 3:2 digital cameras,
while on a flatbed scanner like microtek i800 captures about 32mpx of a 6x6 frame on a matter of couple minutes, being able even to do multiple exposures and/or passes for better results

ofc, you could take multiple shots of while using a dslr, but, imo, that's not practical since it takes time to get the right set-up for each frame

if you're going to buy a lens for scanning purposes, you might as well buy one dedicated 35mm scanner

if you opt for the lens, then you get a extra lens on your set, ofc
but if you go for the dedicated scanner (not flatbed), you get excellent and very consistent images in really short time (way less than a 1h for a whole 36 frames roll)
plus, silverfast software is the shit when it comes to converting color negatives to positive images

That will do the opposite.
You get less red light underwater, which isn't what a filter does quite specifically the opposite. You'll only accentuate the blue tint that your tungsten film has.

here's a short post on the matter by PE (who was a photo engineer at kodak) on apug:

So what are people doing for scanning 120 negatives? I doubt the efficacy of DSLR scanning a 6x6, but it seems like there aren't any affordable dedicated options. Flatbeds have a shitty rep, but I've seen others recommend them. How's the Epson v800?

All these >>3229204 scanned on a V550. Honestly it's not the sharpest as the film holders and fixed focus don't work well together, but it does the job quickly and easily and I picked it up for very little.

flatbeds get a bad rep because they're not good for scanning 35mm

for mf and lf they're usually great tbqh

I've have used epson v700, microtek i800 and microtek f1, for scanning various formats from 6x6 to 4x5

the lowest res one, the epson, would consistently get at least 25mpx from a 6x6
the microteks would get me 37mpx on a 6x7
this is more than enough for printing up to 11x14
and you get all the goods from mf/lf film (color depth, great dr etc)

especially if you used the multiexposure and/or multipass option on microteks

thing is
even though those 25-35mpx are more than enough for printing even for galleries
you could get 70mpx from a mf frame if you were using a dedicated scanner, like supercoolscan or fuji flatbeds
not to get into the area of drum scanning, where you could achieve over 100mpx without breaking a sweat

ofc, that would require top notch glass, camera, tripods etc, but all that is usually the rule when shooting mf

It's not tungsten film. Its standard daylight balanced slide film. All Ektachrome shifts magenta when expired. I'm banking on the magenta shift countering the blue. If it hadn't shifted magenta it'll just be normal daylight balanced.

I scan with my A7. After cropping I get 3950x3950px @ 350dpi. Fine for anything other than large prints, in which case id simply scan the frame twice, stitch, and wind up with 6000x6000px.

Astia, Sensia, and Fortia haven't been produced for a long time. If you can find it, a single roll will be long expired and $20+ (closer to $40+ for Fortia). If you're needing to steal film from Walmart, sounds like you can't afford to play with the big boy pro films anyway.

not sure what you mean

for shooting 4x5, I can't say I really enjoyed it, since had few opportunities actually take pictures and did not enjoy the pace it had - it was cumbersome
on the other had, nicely printed 4x5 negatives have an actual photographic feel that it's definitely lacking on 35mm and aps/ff digital
that is, so much detail in a large print that feels realistic, as says Ctein

for scanning 4x5, you do not want epson scanners since their holders are rather flimsy and, if I recall correctly, only the v750 model and upwards do have a holder for 4x5 and 8x10
both microtek i800 and f1 are decent scanners for lf, since they have good holders and no glass interface in-between for holding the film
resolution-wise is way more than enough, given the size of the negs, though not that sharp at 100%, if you're a pixel peeper

any plustek, nikon coolscan, minolta dimage is decent
look for info on the specific models you find, though
ebay, craiglist, all good for buying

Bought a Nikon FE to replace my FG that I gave to my cousin. Shot a roll of Cinestill BWXX rated at 1600 I got on Black Friday over the holiday break.

I was super psyched to try out the double exposure lever. Overall I think its a great camera. What are your guys' favorite film Nikons? Here's one of the double exposures btw.

I used to do it all the time when I first started to shoot. Never again, you gain pretty much nothing out of it. You may think "oh, I can now shoot C200 at night!" until you get the results back and they are a color shifted grainy mess.

On the other hand I did find out, by doing this, that shooting ColorPlus at 100 makes for some really nice deep reds so there's that I guess.

since there's barely no agitation and lower temps (16C), you as much grain as there's in emulsion when stand developing in rodinal

thing is that fine grain developers usually have some grain diluting substance to make it look smoother

Watch cloud movement, look to the horizon in that direction, understand the local weather patterns (you should if you live where you're shooting).

Pay attention to the weather all the time and you'll get better at it. Run the Weather Channel on TV in the background while you use your computer.

I love weather and feel I've become pretty good at predicting it for the above reasons. Just yesterday I told some friends we were going to have an amazing sunset even though it was raining and 4pm. They wouldn't believe me. Sure enough, the rain moved away and was between the setting sun and us, resulting in those crazy golden rainy sunsets.

Considering photography is all about light and weather has a massive impact over light, it's pretty crazy that most photographers who shoot outdoors don't learn more about weather. Even roughly knowing the water temp of nearby lakes and the ambient air temp + dew point can accurately tell you if fog will form.

Running the first test roll through today, I've tried playing with the lens in both positions but I'm not sure yet if I prefer accessibility of the focus knob over ease of viewing the scale. I do really like how easy it is to estimate the depth of field with the red arrows moving around; I sure wish more zone focusing cameras did this.

There's also something oddly arousing about that solid alloy body.

Got my ga645 test roll back. Some frames have light leaks on the short 4.5 side. Don't think it's the light seals, stuff looks new. Google search show some talks about the film not being rolled tight enough. Has this happened to you ga645 users here?

Also I think I'll embrace the portrait format. Holding the camera sideways is quite a bother.

Fomapan 200 is decent, forget the other variants. 100 doesn't offer any noticeable advantage in grain and 400 is just horrible. Foma's emulsions have flat ass contrast and are completely unsuitable for pushing, also sometimes they come with scratches. Pic related is MF Fomapan 100.

I picked up a Tiara for my first compact.

Spent more than I should, but it is pretty darn neat. Full-auto and easily pocketable. Mine is perfectly clean too, looks brand new.

Running a roll through it now, but I am super busy with exams and won’t be able to finish it for a few days.

When you load, put VERY slight pressure on the roll as you wind it onto the take-up spool.

After finishing the roll, make sure you're not letting it lose tightness as you take it out.

Doing those two things should eliminate leaks if the cause is a loosely wound roll.

In terms of shooting in landscape orientation, you'll get used to it. It honestly never bothered me, even in the beginning.

if you shoot under tungsten light, it comes out great
if you use a filter to mimic tungsten light, it comes out decent

You already get colour casts by cross-processing, and those are magnified by the push.

There’s little other than contrast and colour cast to be gained by pushing colour negative film. No real speed gain. It might be easier to correct the casts if you develop normally with no push.

Also I’d say don’t cross processed but it’d fall on deaf ears.

The film can disagrees. It's Vision3 without the remjet on it, they didn't magically change the emulsion for a different color developer.

People do get good results with the stuff, and most people aren't going to go to the trouble of getting ECN-2 chemicals, but it is a cross process.

ecn2 reach different gamma than c41, in order to be compensated for later when scanning/making positives out of it etc

wouldn't mess with kodak vision, though, since you're basically getting an unprintable portra

on the other hand, kodak double x is a really good film that goes for cheap if you're into shooting 35mm b/w (or at least used to be cheap, >3y last checked)

i did not. i got them from a woman whose husband had died. she was giving away boxes of his photography stuff and there were a bunch of negatives in there from the late 70s through the mid 80s, apparently from when they started dating up through having kids.

So I've tried many different ways to get my negatives watermark free (distilled water, drop of detergent, etc) and have come to the realisation that maybe it's the way I dry my film. No it doesn't. Detergent will leave residue on your film. To keep it from leaving residue, you have to dilute it a lot, to the point where it's basically just water. At that point it's not actually doing anything.

Seeing as how that person isn't getting good results, detergent clearly doesn't do the same thing. Photo flo exists for a reason.

Did you not read my OP? I think it's how I dry them not what I use in my final rinse. I've tried tap water, tap water mixed with a drop of detergent, distilled water, distilled water mixed with a drop of detergent.
Also tried drying with using a rubber glove as squeegee and without drying at all (all times left to hang for 2ish hours) and all results are pretty much the same where not drying at all gave me the dirtiest negs and detergent + distilled water + rubberglove squeegee = the best results but still had water marks in some spots.
Like I said in my OP do you think getting an actual film squeegee will help?

The process is roughly the same as C-41 (a bit higher temperature and remjet removal are the only differences).

The chemicals are not available from Kodak in small quantities though. 100L minimum.
BUT, there are people who sell 3L or 5L kits on ebay, usually mixed from raw chemicals. These are much more convenient and almost identical to the Kodak ones.
Second best option is to use RA-4 chemicals (especially the developers), since the also use CD-3 as developing agent (like in ECN-2), instead of C-41's CD-4.

That's a little more than $2/roll. I shoot street, lots of missed shots due to the nature of things I'm trying to do. I can shoot 3-4 rolls of vision3 for the cost of a roll of Portra.

I print via scans, so optically printing from negs doesn't matter to me.

If it’s leaving watermarks, it’s not a good final process. Photo flo leaves no marks and there’s no need for a squeegee. A bottle of photo flo costs less than $10 and lasts forever you cheap bastard.

Ps squeegees can damage your film. Even if you find one you don’t think will hurt your film, if you don’t clean it religiously, it will get build up and then scratch your film :)

You have to be trolling m8.

Use a drying agent like photoflo/adoflo/whatever and don't touch the fuckin film. Wait until it's dry and you're done. No watermarks.

Obviously you'll want to use slow film to get the most out of the meme long exposure effect. With color experiment with cheap shit like C200 until you're comfy, Velvia can be awesome but you need to be accurate with the exposure estimate. Among B/W Neopan ACROS is the undisputed king of long exposures but can be expensive outside Japan. I've used Tmax 100 in urbex stuff for good results on several minute long exposures. Rollei Ortho 25 and RPX 25 are both pretty good (pic related is Ortho 25). Never use Foma.

Shutter time depends on the conditions. Take a measurement with lens wide open and dial set to 1600 if need be, then calculate the exposure from there, quick and easy. Generally city scenes at night are around EV 4-6, overexpose when in doubt. Afaik X-700's shutter control goes down to 16 seconds on automatic, for longer than that you have to use bulb and a cable release. If not shooting in low light, you need to use ND filters. Don't stop the lens down beyond f/16, try to keep it at f/11 to prevent diffraction from fucking your shit up. In low light with slow film and ND's you can easily reach 30 minute exposures, make sure your tripod is up to it.

with the 1600 remark he means that often the cameras meter dont go to those low shutter speeds, so you can set the iso dial to 1600 and then use the reading the camera gives you to calculate the exposure for your iso,

for example, if the camera says 1/8 s with the iso dial on 1600 you should go for a 2 second exposure if your film is 100 iso

Your exposures are relatively good. There are a few that are a little underexposed and one that’s overexposed, but since this is your first roll, you’ve done a pretty good job.

What you really need to work on is composition. Go find a book with info on composition. Thrift stores will typically have some for a good price. Sit down and read up on how to make photos interesting. It can also help to look at photos by other people that you like and think about why those photos work.

squeegees are shitty af, if they're not perfectly clean/pristine they'll run a giant scratch all the way down your negatives. I'd try using actual photo flo (it's like 10 dollars for more than you'll ever use). I squeegee my negs with my fingers (after using photo flo) and never have problems. With your fingers, you can easily squeegee the negatives twice without damaging them, so it's worth trying squeegeeing a couple times with fingers and seeing if that helps.

Actually long before that Voigtlander had already figured out a clever if somewhat cumbersome way to make sure there was no film left in the camera when you open it.
Their 60's Vitomatic cameras (and maybe others) use a dual hinge mechanism where you first open a little door that allows you to see the bottom of the film cassette without letting any light leak to the film itself, and only then you can open the rest of the back.

I recently got some darkroom stuff, including thousands of sheets of paper in sizes up to 20x24 ilford FB, with dates spanning back to the 80s. fucking... don't do this. almost all of it is fogged to fuck. opening a box of paper, testing a few sheets, and it's all trash. infuriating and depressing. I increasingly despise the guy I bought it from.

Got given a Minolta SRT-303b and after doing some research, its seems that the 1.35v PX-675 mercury cell is discontinued, and that the LR-44 1.5v alkaline is fine, but there needs to be some sort of meter adjustment to receive the correct exposure. Has anyone got any info on that?

I'm feeling a bit sick after realising I think I chucked away a PX675 adaptor, mistaking it for a 675 battery a while back

put the lr-44 in there and compare the meter to another meter (another camera/lightmeter app)

adjust the iso on the minolta to compensate if it's off.

Some of my cameras don't have that.

Some of my cameras have that but I got tired of cutting out a little piece of the box because it doesn't automatically fit the box end.

Sometimes I'd take the film out but forget to take the cardboard out like an idiot and that makes the whole thing an exercise in futility.

Mainly, though, the bigger reason is that I kept shooting half a roll and then setting the camera down and not picking it up again until a year and a half later and it annoyed me. But accidentally forgetting a camera was loaded was also a concern.

It took us, as a civilization, a little while to figure out how to do that cheaply without letting the film get exposed. Most cameras produced after clear plastics became cheap, reliable, and an acceptable material to use in a camera do have the little window.

Who made Wphoto film? It was definitely less sharp than Studio 35, but still sharper than name brand film.

LR-44 voltage fluctuates over the battery's life, which will lead to previous compensation not being accurate anymore. I've noticed this shift with my Autoreflex T, and it makes batteries effectively redundant as you can never be fully sure whether the exposure reading is correct without constantly making cross measurements. SR-44's are supposedly more stable. You can find zinc-air cells that match the old mercury battery's voltage, but they are on the expensive side and expire on their own in a few months. The SRT series does not require batteries to operate as it only powers the meter, so it's not like it's necessary.

Whatever takes your fancy.
MF has much more variety of form factors.

Stick with the following brands and it's hard to go wrong though

TLR's from rollei and mamiya
SLR's from hassleblad, mamiya, bronica, Pentax
RF's from Fuji

Your other concern is frame size, there's a vast difference from 645 to 6x9, personally I think 645 isn't a big enough jump to justify over 135. It was the crop babby of it's time.

There will be a slight learning curve going to MF, loading film is much more of a pain and there's much less automation. But as soon as you're familiar with the model you get, it'll be second nature.

There's hundreds of guides on how to do this on youtube and google. They include what you need to buy and take you through step my step. They'd certainly be more comprehensive than someone replying to your comment

Yeah that's true, I guess I'm wondering if there are any lesser known methods that people use here, sort of like the digital DSLR scanning methods for example.

Not really, developing is a by-the-books sort of thing. I mean there's hundreds of different times and recipes for various film and developer combos, and as you learn to dev you'll experiment with time and dilution and agitation to achieve the look you want.

I guess there's stand developing, which is developing B&W in a very low dilution developer for quite a long time, with minimal or no agitation. This produces less grainy negatives and is favoured by those that push film. There's caffenol as well, which is a DIY developer made from coffee grounds among other things. It's not too great though, in my experience.

Anyway, you should get some experience under your belt with traditional developing before you start experimenting

It's easier and it's harder.

It's easier because all C41 colour film develops for exactly the same time in the same recipe etc etc. It's a standardised process. Conversely B&W is different for every film and every developer

It's harder because you have to keep the chemicals warm to a precise temperature, and the process is quite sensitive to changes in temperature.

I started on colour and moved to B&W. Most people do it the other way around. If you've got an effective way to keep chemical bottles at an exact temperature (a sous vide, for example) then go ahead. The first few times I did it in my bathtub
