The Ricoh GR cameras are some of the most beloved cameras of all time, and I want to know why (as a non owner/user).

They're some seriously pricey point and shoot compact cameras, even the on paper pretty sorry 10 MP CCD GR Digital is considered some sort of prized god machine, and I simply want to know why.

The snap focus (read about it) is something that should be available on every camera.

Being able to shoot with the screen off, from the hip, and know you'll get a good picture is amazing.

It's very slim and compact and doesn't need a lens cap.

Currently borrowing one from a friend. If you're a "street" photographer it's probably the best option.

I like that you can switch from 28mm to 35mm. AF is quick.

no you cant. it's a fixed 28mm lens and the camera crops it to approximate the fov of a 35mm lens but keeping the depth and other qualities of a 28mm

idiot, what daido made famous was the film gr1.
most gr users these days don't give a fuck about what daido used, they choose the gr because it's still king of the hill of compacts, the only contenders are sony rx100 series (the sensor and controls are a joke) and fuji x100 (not really pocketable).

Only have experience with the APS-C generation digital series, none of the earlier ones.
The current GR and GR2 have
- Top-tier ergonomics
- Fast AF (impressively so for a purely contrast detect based system)
- Sharp lens from wide open
- A good APS-C sized sensor in a genuinely pocketable body
- A ton of customization options and 3 presets on the mode dial you can fully configure yourself
- Full-press snap focus, a genius invention that should be on every camera.

I have the bad habit of continuously buying and selling cameras due to GAS, but my GR is the sole camera I currently own I'm 100% sure of I'll keep using until it falls apart. It's been in my pocket every single day for almost 2 years now. I can only recommend it.

GR (APSC) and GRIV (10mp CCD) user here.

So, why is the CCD GR such a highly praised camera?
>ultra small and pocketable
>very discreet looks
>perfect focal length
>1'1/7" CCD sensor that somehow spits out RAWs with unbelievably good dynamic range
>literal non-existent noise at lower ISOs
>solid RAWs to work with; don't break apart easily
>at higher ISOs, the noise will look like film grain
>stabilized sensor (GRIV)
>super sharp f1.9 lens
>can take crazy macro shots in manual mode (from as close as 2mm)
>snap mode (best thing ever)
>with snap mode and turned off screen (while using an optical viewfinder), the battery will last for ages

Yes, technically it is "just" manual focus, but MF with a convenient set of distances (infinity, 5m, 2.5m, etc.) you can very quickly switch between.
MF on something without a focus ring is always a PITA, snap focus is perfectly usable, pretty comfy even.

Full press snap focus is even better.
With it on, if you half-press then full-press the shutter button, the camera will just use autofocus as usual. If you immediately full-press though, the camera instantly shoots at the snap focus distance you've preset (which you can still easily switch on the fly).
So you can comfortably walk around with AF on, and when you want to capture a decisive moment where you suspect the AF might not be fast enough, you just ram the shutter button and the GR will take a picture exactly that instant. The focus might not be 100% dead on, but you'll have the shot.

For me personally, this is the one killer feature that sets the GR apart from all the rest. You don't know what you're missing on other cameras until you've gotten used to it.

Yes, unfortunately. If you carry it in your pocket you _will_ get dust on the sensor eventually. (In a pouch or something the chance is probably lower)
It's the one bad thing about the GR, the Achilles' heel of an IMO almost perfect camera.

The good thing is, it's pretty easy to screw open and blow out the dust. There are multiple guides if you google. Already had to do it 3 times though in the 2 years I've owned it.

On a sidenote, I'm starting to suspect the entry point for dust isn't the lens barrel as is often suggested, but the hole underneath the flash hinge. When I last opened up the camera there was a massive amount that got inside through there at least.
Since taping up that gap (at the cost of the pop-up flash popping up a little less snappily), I haven't had dust issues yet. Can't promise it's a real solution though, will have to wait till after a few more months of use.

??? i looked it up. how do you use snap focus with the screen off? how do you know what zone you're in with the screen off spinning a wheel or when you have to go through an onscreen menu?

when you pick up the cam, with the screen off, what do you have to do to take a picture of something, say, 5m away?

5m at f/5.6 everything from 2.5m to infinity is in focus. Should be doable, right?

Considering buying a GR. How abysmal is the GR/GRII in low light conditions? I know this can be compensated with snap focus but
1. does the AF hunt back and forth?
2. is the AF is slow or very slow at focusing?

It all depends.
It's a contrast detect system, so if you can find an area of contrast (preferably a vertical division) it'll do fine even in low light.
In areas with little contrast it'll take about 0.5s - 1s to focus in most circumstances. For a compact I think it's pretty decent in low light actually.

Both the Fuji X70 and the Nikon Coolpix A got discontinued as they weren't as successful as the companies have initially thought. The GR survives them all since Pentax/Ricoh Cameras is only a tiny fraction of Ricohs overall businesses that won't hurt them. That's the only thing that keeps Pentax/Ricoh Cameras alive.

GR was a lot better from those two from the start, and it's not a large market for fixed lense point and shoots, so it outlived them. And it's not that it's without competition nowdays. Sony's got their own premium point and shoot, Olympus Tough, X100F, while the rest have mirrorless for same purpose.

I only cared about dust in the first month. Noticed a speck when shooting above f11 with a flash against a white wall. It eventually disappeared but, 2 years later using only the GR2, i haven't bothered to check it again.

I own both a GR and a X100T. I am constantly torn between carrying my GR, which is lighter, generally nice to use, and my X100T, which offers me more control, has no dust issue but is also chunkier. Ricoh is just so damn light tho.

You simply need to take some care of the camera and you're good to go. Brush off any dust every now and then, don't put it in a pocket that's full of lint/dust/dirt and it'll all be fine. I've been using my GR2 for more than two years now and there's only a tiny tiny little speck of dust on either the lens or the sensor which I usually stamp out in Photoshop. Takes me two seconds.

But then, I do not baby my camera at all, so yeah.

Using the hood and/or the wide angle adapter help help keep out the dust as well.

Opening the GR and removing dust is really easy, did it 3 times already. Takes maybe 10-15 minutes if you're trying to be very careful.

It's about just as small. Twice as big aperture. Has viewfinder. And fits the pocket still.

It's nearly 2cm thicker, a bit over 1cm taller, and nearly 200g heavier. Those aren't insignificant numbers when it comes to a pocketable camera.

The X70 is 1cm thicker, 100g heavier, and close to the same height and width. It also only has an f/2.8 lens like the GR II, although it doesn't extend/retract.

Just google, it's what I did.
There's just one way to do it so just read like 3 guides describing the same thing and you'll have all the detail you need.

It's not necessary to disconnect anything. If I recall correctly you have to remove a few screws, wriggle a bit and lift off the back, remove 2 screws and unclip a wire, flip the LCD out of the way. Then you have to screw out 3 screws with springs and you have access to the sensor.

I don't recommend actually touching the sensor with anything btw. Just blowing off the dust (I use a Giottos rocket blower) always sufficed for me.
