Heard they're often overlooked due to the looks. Apparently it's the black sheep of the M family.

Probably a good way to get into Leica. You might have more to spend on nice glass, and then you could always upgrade the body later.

I ended up with an M4-2 because one fell into my lap for a good price, but I would have quite liked an M5. People seem to think they're ugly by Leica standards but I kinda dig that they distinctly look like the time period they were made in.

The strap lugs being on one side would probably drive me crazy though.

The M5 is probably the best Leica to ever go into production and yet it is hated because it doesn't look look a Leica. Leica fags are just like the /o/tists who screech "mu heritage" when Porsche changes the 911 slightly. The M5 could have led to an over all improvement of the system but instead it signaled a step into the past and nothing but a collector market. If you look at the M6 prototype from Canada, with a proper film door instead of the bottom loader that even digital Ms try to replicate, had the prototype gone ahead Leica might still be a professional camera today.

if the parts are even available they are repaired with used parts from dead cameras. so the replacement photocell is the same age and just as prone to failure as the one it replaced.

I don't know, they may have new old stock
but according to wiki the CdS cell which fucks up is still available.

with all of those old cameras resistor drift can throw them off a lot, combined with the banned mercury battery, the alkaline version will make that meter about as accurate as the sunny 16 rule

Yea, they sell an adapter so that alkaline batteries act like mercury ones, but I am unsure how well that works.

M5 is really nice to use. The shutter speed dial ever so slightly overhanging the front edge makes adjustments while looking in the viewfinder very smooth.

Only drawback is they are a little harder to sell. M6s are as liquid as cash.

I have heard repairs for the meter are somewhat hard to find, but you run into the same issue with the M6ttl/m7. If you're looking for a metered Leica, I'd go for it (especially considering how fast M6 prices are going up)

Not going to go up astronomically (certainly nothing Contax T2-level) but demand for the M6 is definitely increasing. A year or two ago you could get a clean one for $1250 or so, they're now at least $1450 and usually closer to $1600-1800 on Ebay. They're just the most popular Leica atm, along with the M3 (single stroke M3 prices have also gone up and now sell for more than an M4 on average).

to that end, I think the M4 is probably the best deal in Leicas right now. They aren't really hyped at the moment, but they have a very strong rep with collectors over time and prices are fairly low.
