How good is 18-55mm? I found a nice entry tier camera (Canon1300d) that includes a 18-55mm lens. Could someone give me a rundown on what it would and would not do well?

18-55mm lenses means its a 'zoom' lens.

18mm will give you a wide field of view, for pictures of crowds or buildings.

55mm is more for a portrait shot.

the 18-55mm will allow you to choose fields of view between those shots.

The lens you are talking about has a F4.5 - which means your pictures will be a bit darker, so you will need longer shutter speed or high ISO.

Overall it is a good newbie lens and its cheap, new price is like 75USD.

There are websites like camera compare where you can put into two different cameras to compare the stats.

I got my 200d (which is the next model up and has audio input and touch screen and better generally for video) with that lens from ebay from hong kong and used a 10% ebay discount. I now have a few other lenses

It's decent for general use, I actually got a lot of interesting shots that were sharp enough from this lens. It also has image stabilization that helps for video. The things I don't like about this lens are 1. It's not a fast lens so I can't get a shallow depth of field, 2. Fringes on corners, 3. Not as sharp as 50mm 1.8 or 40mm pancake, 4. Low contrast. Would I recommend using this lens?, yes for the first month owning it. I started using prime and never gone back.

It's ok and will probably be fine for a few months if you're new to photography. You should consider purchasing a nicer lens such as the EF 50mm once you get into it some more.

Yes. It's a single focal length, not a zoom.

This made me look at some used ones for sale online in my region and I found a good deal, a Canon 1300D with 18-55mm for almost half the price. It has no IS though, is IS that much better?

I once bought a rebel with the 18-55 stm. It's ok. But it would have been better if I bought the body only with the 24mm stm and a 50mm stm. Those lenses are all you need with an aps-c sensor and they make much better images. They don't have image stabilization so you may want a tripod also for use with the 50mm.

What kind of photography are you into?
I mean it's not going to give you a ridiculously shallow depth of field and it's not a telephoto lens, but other than that there's nothing wrong with it.

I know it's kind of a cliche saying "gear doesn't matter" but it's fairly true. Spending another $100+ on a different lens isn't going to make your photos any better. Just practice. And learn how to edit.

I'm mainly looking at urban/landscape photography. I can imagine I'd get into whole other photography once I actually have my camera, though.

18-55 should be fine for that, nice and wide at 18 so you don't have to back up all the time to frame things and you have the ability to zoom a bit if there's something you want to isolate
