Dear /p/. Few months ago I asked you about general advices about cosplay photography for beginner. Following your suggestions, I bought my first DSLR (Nikon D5300 with 18-105mm kit, replacing Panasonic Lumix compact) while still reading books about photography and I have few questions about two cases I still dont grasp - doing photos of marches and indoors, especially with poor light. When looking around the internet, advices about photographing marches are mostly about photograping protests and rarely contain info about technical stuff (mostly about "catching the emotions", one even had lot of talk about hiding camera, bringing food with you and avoiding police). Cosplay walks are surely peaceful and happy. But I dont really understand what kind of settings should I use. At one hand, I would rather want some higher depth of field and thus smaller aperture but at the same time, since both cosplayers and me will be constantly walking and I wont have more than few seconds to catch a moment, I would need fast shutter speed. So, just P and let the camera do the work, while I only aim and shoot, with locked 50mm or something? Next walk is in April so I still have some time for practice but Im afraid that if I would, say, stay in city centre and just keep doing photos people walking by, I would earn punch to the face. As for indoor shoots, cons I went recently had poor inside light - one that took part in summer had bright light coming from windows so it was less of a problem but another one took part in december, plus weather was cloudy (mentioned compact camera I had that time right away suggested ISO 1600, even with 800 it had giantic grains). I have my D5300 since last week now and only tested it at home and with one poor lightbulb and ISO 400 I could still get very sharp photo on gunpla model working as test subject but I want to learn how to do indoor photos with live models the best I can. Thank you for any advice or help, like always!

Westerners doing cosplay is a mistake

>>3238857 Thats not nice. I always admire their work in doing costumes, they do what they like, find it happy and are not afraid to show it.
But thats more of /cgl/ talk, thread is about technique and stuff.

>>3238857 This, don't give these hambeasts more attention OP
Also buy a 50mm 1.8 if you wanna do indoor, they're cheap as hell and brighter than a kit lens

>>3238862 Shouldnt be 35mm one? I mean, this model have 1,5x multiplier.

>>3238869 That's fine too. Longer focal lengths are better for portraits but if you want to go wider then 35mm is fine too. Which focal length do you use most on your kit lens?

Based on the questions you're asking you're going to come away with a load of trash whatever you do If it's not until April, go out and get better at photography and answer your own questions in the process. Experience is the best teacher and tool

>>3238929 This guy is probably right, your questions are so basic that any subject-specific advice will go over your head.
You need to learn how to use a camera first.

I dont even know, what Im suposed to do to get it.

Shutter priority, auto iso max 6400 for that sensor. Shoot 1/250-1/500 when possible, settle for 1/125 when dim, accept 1/60 when very dim and subject holds still. Leave vr on, shoot over 1/250 if possible when zoomed in all the way. Remember 1/125 stops most walking motion, but 1/250 is even better.
Anonymous
>>3239131 why not just aperture priority and shoot wide open if you're going to have all these rules and conditions? the background isn't interesting and you are probably taking pictures of one person/group at a time anyway.
Anonymous
>>3239148 Because aperture priority will happily kick you down to 1/30 f4 iso 100. The primary objective is capturing photos that aren't blurry shit. Shutter priority puts that objective first, and auto iso facilitates it, especially with slow kit lenses. If you have to double check the viewfinder for A-mode's chosen shutter speed, it's already too late. If your subject is posing or stationary, then by all means go aperture priority to try and squeeze out what bokeh you can.
Different tools, different purposes.

Cosplayers are mentally ill. why would you want to ridicule them and make light of their affliction?
Anonymous

>>3242170 Because they are NOT ill, they are having fun and I admire their hardwork in costumes making and their bravely in cosplaying in public.
And I want to train social situations and since at the same time I can get better at photography - double win.

Quick question - what aperture provide enough depth of field to cover entire person, if its walking diagonally towards you? f/8?
