It's finally happaned. The dreaded 'will you shoot my wedding?' request from a freind. He won't be put of either. Despite me telling him I have no experience other than some snapshots off to the side of a pro at a wedding. I am meeting up with the couple tomorrow to discuss it. But it looks like I've been roped in regardless.

What the hell do you mean you have been roped in? If you have any doubts or reservations you say no and walk away. Even if you are considering it, are you doing it for free? If so tell them that they can't complain about the quality, but the cheaper something is the more demands people tend to have. It's not just photography, also camera wear, time processing etc. that should be factored in.

Well, to be fair I'm in the very same situation. The wedding, cremony and everything will be at night, I'm going with my SB800, a D7200 and a 18-55 and a 70-300, I'm either going to star shooting with the 18-55 at the ceremony, and to the guests in their tables, then I'm using the 70-300 to end the night and leave. (Unnecesary info, but writing it helps me remember it), anyway I'm doing a lot of takes, so do that, and be on point, don't be distracted (again, own memos)... May the force be with us!

Had that happen to me when I was pretty fresh. I have trouble saying no to people but the thought of doing something like that was sufficiently terrifying to an asocial autist like myself and I managed to turn them down despite their insistence.

Reasons to say you're not comfortable:
-Your lenses aren't fast enough, and for a full setup (cards, batteries, light stands) would cost close to what an experienced shooter would charge
- You don't feel comfortable not having a second shooter for backup
- You're OK with taking a few posed photographs day-of, but you are not comfortable or confident in shooting subjects in motion (might miss focus, might miss key moments, or just frame them poorly).

I would grab a few quotes of lower-end photographers in the area and say you're more comfortable attending as a guest, as you're already not confident you'll be delivering great work under the pressure of the circumstances.

Do help educate them or try to see what style they actually enjoy (Editoral, Crunchy contrast, or "Fine Arts"). Ask what their budget and give them a rundown of what the can expect (no second shooter or 6-8 hours of coverage, etc).

Educate so that you were helpful, but do not consent to doing this. I had the opposite side problem where I found a photographer I liked for $1800, had 5 weddings in his portfolio. Asked a friend just to see what she'd charge for a comparable package, knowing she's only shot 1 wedding...$2400. When I declined, she did not attend.

Once I explained how much work a wedding is and that I can't even sit and eat for a few minutes without missing something. I said that I would do the getting ready photos and first look photos and some posed before the ceremony. After that shed have to find something else

I dont rly do social media, i mean i have account on all the major ones and post stuff sometimes, mostly use them to ”stay in touch”.

One time i accidentelly the whole thing posting a selfie holding a DSLR and shit was not fun, people from fucking pre-school started messaging me about shooting all sorts of shit.

I did a few shoots, ended a couple of friendships and i will never do it again.

The worst was a ”friend” who wanted me to take some photos of his house so he could sell it without a realtor, he complained i didnt get enough of the rooms in each shot and i tried explaining that i would need a wider angle lens for that, and that one of those cost X to buy and about Y to rent for a day, he was furious when it dawned on him that i wouldnt be spending any money on that. ”But i even paid you (about as much a lens rental would have cost me) and now you don’t want to do it properly?”

A friend of mine wanted a photographer for her new business and asked me if my then-girlfriend could do it. I asked how much she'd pay and she said she couldn't pay a penny. Next day she's posting pictures from an extremely exclusive restaurant and posing with her new designer clothes. The photos she eventually posted were godawful, she twisted some guy's arm until he did it for free.

These people don't see you as anything more than a tool for their own needs. Don't give in. You're worth more than that.

OP here I am not that imcompetent. Main issue is lack of pro gear. But I can probably get away with a lot. They don't expect pro levels. 70D with kit lens, Canon speedlite, BBC, Canon 50mm F1.8, cheap 200mm AF F5.6+, Sigma 30mm F1.4, shit tripod (might need to get a slightly better one beforehand but I wanted one anyhow and he agreed to pay for some additional equipment). It's not a church wedding (shooting under a windmill). Close quarters 30+ audience attendance. Went out to scout the shooting locations with them on Saturday. Told them I have no experience of weddings but have a few ideas. Just do not expect much. They are getting most of it on video too so I am just a bonus. I also owe him anyhow (many paid meals and movie tickets).

Could be fun. There is no commitment to be on every shot. Just the main ones. Shove it Av mode for some shots. Switch to high shutter for those burst shots like throwing the confetti etc. They have assigned me an assistant of sorts to move people around so not as bad as being on my own.

BTW if going in for close shots of wedding couples where there is a lot of white wedding dress I guess I need to over expose slightly (like snow) to prevent under expsure? I can always try setting to take 3 shots +- 1 I suppose.

Don't overexpose or you'll blow out the detail on the bride's dress. Shoot normal, and if anything underexpose slightly and adjust in post. It's easier to fight a little noise than mess around with blown highlights.

I'm only a hobbyist but I've had the same issue come up when I was a DJ. I played in clubs and had nothing but min house in my libraries.
A mate asked me to DJ his wedding, I said no and explained that a wedding is a little different to a club of 500 flogs on pingas.
About a month later, he apologized because he saw how much work their hired DJ ended up putting in.
I eventually did a couple of weddings a few years later. Made about 2 grand for each, but between renting lighting, speakers and buying music, I was paying myself a few dollars an hour in prep work. Easier once you have all the music and know how you're going to do the whole things but the first few were so much more work than I realised.
I hate the thought that shooting a wedding might be similar.
At least in that case, you can just turn up and shoot then process with less of a deadline. Seen some photographers take nearly a year to get wedding shots back.

When I finally did play weddings, it was the most stressful job I've ever done.
Frustrating to be asked repeatedly by people to play "something for the oldies" by the mother of the bride when you're playing modern commercial dance the bride and groom asked for.
I'd rather the predictability of taking the same snaps at every wedding without worrying some drunk moron is going to knock a truss full of lights over onto the dance floor or unplug a speaker to charge their phone.

If your experience with wedding DJs is that they press play on a playlist, you have been to some VERY cheap weddings.

Don't do it.

It's a hell of a job. People think you just show up and point your fancy camera at everything and job done. Prepare for every kind of lighting situation and crowd organisation skills. Prepare for shooting moving people in low-light conditions while still retaining atmosphere (can't just blast them with flash).

Do you have any experience with using flash on and off camera? Because those are vital skills for the job. Are you getting paid? Either way you'll have to downplay their expectations.

I did a wedding with no experience.
Got paid $200 for the day and it took me fuckin days to edit the photos and videos.
Take multiple batteries, two cameras and a tripod. It's much preferable to get a second shooter.
I managed to get almost every moment except a few

Couple loved it.
People were very friendly.
Learnt so much.
Rewarding experience as a photographer

Seriously just be upfront with the expectations and do your best
And you'll get to sit down and eat dinner as well as take video of the speeches and itll look okay.

It's clear you have absolutely no experience in this situation. Here are a few possible outcomes for amateur photogs shooting weddings:

1. Photog realizes during the wedding that this shit wasn't worth getting paid $200 and hates himself and never does it again.

2. Photog realizes after the wedding that it was a lot of hard work, but he still got paid $200. From there he either submits subpar Chosis tier photos to his friends and ruins his already crap reputation OR he cares about his work and realizes he would pretty much be working five cents an hour in post. Hates himself and never does it again.

3. Photog has some understanding of how much work is ahead of him and knows what wedding photogs usually charge and goes ahead and asks for upwards a grand. Submits Chosis tier trash that isn't worth a grand. If the happy couple has poor taste, photog got lucky. He will probably try to do it again until the real world crushes him and he hates himself and never does it again.

People that shoot large events with large expectations should have the skill to match the amount of money they would need to be compensated for all the time spent during and, more importantly, after the wedding. Don't end up becoming another wedding photog horror story.

That said, disregard my post and do whatever you want.

In conclusion: If you and the person you are shooting are good friends and you have som sort of knowlege about using a DSLR, you should be in the clear. Hopefully your buddy knows that you are an amateur and not a pro and thus treat you as such. The worst thing that could happen is that he doesn't get proffesional pictures. But on the other hand, that's what you get for not hiring a proffesional photographer

Shouldn't the ownership automatically go to the buyer when they're paying for a shoot? It's not like your selling a print to a stranger, you took a picture of a family.

Selling the same family their pictures and trying to get an additional $50 for "the copyright" seems wrong to me.

No, ownership does not automatically exchange hands. First and foremost, photographers are paid for their time. Anything else is negotiated in the contract, including copyright, restrictions, and the delivery of the finished product

Most photogs who do what you're thinking actually retain the copyright, but give you a signed release authorizing you to print, share, and post the photos.

Usually there are restrictions like personal use only, and no editing if uploading to social media, and sometimes requiring you to show credit or link them when you upload it. (Though most won't find out if you do post it.) The personal use only restriction prevents you from selling the picture for profit, but since most people just want to print and share them online with friends that's all they need.

Since the photographer retains the copyright they can continue to use the photo as they choose, either in their portfolio or for sale. This means you should speak with the photographer if you don't want your pictures to be public at a later date. If you're doing a boudoir shoot or nude shoot and you don't want it to end up online you'd better make sure your privacy is included in the contract!
