Would it be bad for a novice to jump into photography with a D850 and AF-S FX NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens?

I've been reading around and unsure.

Then yeah, that's a great camera to start out with. If you really get into photography, it'll save you money in the long run because you won't find yourself wanting to upgrade because there's basically nowhere TO upgrade (except for a D5, but that's more of a different-use-case than an upgrade).

You will, however, want to get another lens to go with it. Like a 50mm, or a 28-70 zoom or something like that. 105mm is a telephoto, so that would be annoying to use as your one and only lens.

Im really on the fence abut Nikon. I shot with nikon ever since junior high. Ive used alot of their equipment and was pretty happy for the most part. I bought a d 610,it was all downhill from there. The camera was a lemon,it produced black spots in my pictures even after having my lens and camera body sent back 4 times in 3 months for cleaning. Then when I went to push down my flash it broke. It wouldnt stay down. So when I sent it back to nikon they wouldnt repair it under warranty because of impact damage they said. So after that expensive lemon I have switched companies and am much happier. After I read up on Nikon I found out they make more money off repairs. I know lemons happen but I felt like nikon did not stand behind their product so I cannot support Nikon anymore. Good luck with that camera.

My only concern for you is the telephoto prime as your only lens. I own some and they're for very specific uses. It sucks to have to go change your lens when you just want to take snapshits of your cat sleeping.

No! Buy a Chinese Squire Strat and a crappy practice amp for $50, better still find a classical guitar in a bin and spend $2 on a set of strings.

If you don't get bored or frustrated in 3 days you may wish to invest more time (not money) into your new hobby.

As hobbies go photography is piss easy.

but im in the same situation just a lot less money

how would it be getting a sony a7ii to dive in
a7rii would be great but just too much for me to spend atm
also going to get a 28-70 f3.5 as my solo lens for a while

Same answer: if you have money to burn or are sure you’ll like and stick with photography as a habit, it’s a great way to go. If you think you might set your camera down one day and not touch it again for a very long period of time, get something way cheaper.

In any hobby gear does matter BUT... I've never met an individual that has benefited from buying top end gear at the beginning. Especially something as specific as OP's first choice.

I once sold the most expensive Ovation guitar (available at the time) to a guy who was looking to learn how to play. Did he learn how to play? NO. Was it easier to learn on and less frustrating? NO!

Young kids who bought crappy guitars and PRACTICED made real progress fast. When they did upgrade/change it was a massive leap to them. Most still play today (and get better).

Gear is just that, a tool to achieve your goals. Would you buy an F1 racing car just to learn how to drive only to discover you like off road?

There's no difference between a cheap guitar and an expensive one, sorry you fell for this marketing meme. A cheap camera is mostly barebones and performs poorly compared to a high end camera that has good low light, good resolution, good framerate, has weather sealing, better better life, better AF, and better video. Not to mention the other tiny little things that help make shooting more convenient. Pretty autistic to willingly hold yourself back. And guess what, they also hold their value longer because they're not upgraded as often as the lower end cameras plus they're simply good cameras, which means he can always sell it and get most of his money back if he doesn't like it.
