Lightroom has an overlay. Go to cropping and rotate through the different overlays with the O key and shift+o changes the directions.

Maths and science people generally don't into arts. Pythagoras, Euclid, Fibonacci, da Vinci et al were autists trying to find rules for beauty. Da Vinci wasn't an artist, he could draw but so could everyone who was educated back then.

In composition it's all about resolving contradictions. Odd vs even, square vs circle, spiral vs triangle etc. Symmetry is pretty boring without context, order in chaos. Fractal geometry is also quite boring really, there's no point, no intent.

Look at the images you enjoy. It's easy to see the harmony that pleases you but harder to identify the dissonance that gives it substance.

tl;dr spirals and rectangles are cool

OP in your image, 61.8% over to the right, 61.8% down from the top. The golden ratio is 1.618. So a=1 and b=.618, a/(a+b) is also .618. That's the point. So basically you can draw the first two squares by estimating 61.8% over and 61.8% down/up to get an idea. Or just crop in post.

I'm getting my art degree in a couple of months and I finished an art school. I'm just a photography hobbyists but I can share some of my experience.

In school and college, nobody really talked about the golden ratio as a must or even a "fits all" solution. It's just some aspect of an overall image that you can exploit or not.

Think about it like the bokeh of photography. You can make something stand out but it can also look retarded if that's all that you're doing.

In time, you'll learn to eyeball it if you wanna use it. You can also just ditch it as there are other aspects of arranging an overall image.

Really, how many more? As a painter he was pretty mediocre and was hardly prolific. He was what today we would term a scientist/inventor. His best "works" were the illustrations and sketches for his research, these are not Art.

Except this photo is a good example of why golden ratio composition is a meme that will not make you a better photographer. It's a very unbalanced frame that's 2/3 empty, not resolving the focus of the bird's gaze whereas if it were in the middle your eyes would focus solely on the bird, much less distracting. Also on such a long lens you worsen the impact of chromatic aberration by having sharp lines closer to the edge of frame.

Develop your eye, you're not going to learn anything from a spiral or some dumb overlay
