well, the problems with SLRs is that there is no grip.

Same here when I shoot my D-SLR. What you said only applies to entry level Rebels and Nikon D3xxx/5xxx cameras.

Marketing my man.

Film SLRs for photojournalists and sports/wildlife photographers still looked just as autistic and huge as today's dSLRs. They emphasized FPS, weather sealing, interchangeable finders/focusing screens etc.

But there were alternatives for different styles of shooting.

Cameras like the Olympus OM series or Pentax MX/LX emphasized compact size both in body and lenses and big viewfinders, with tactile controls. The Contarex emphasized quality fit and finish and great lenses, it felt like a jewel.

Problem is, nobody is making dSLRs for shooting styles other than the photojournalist style.
It's because features like "quiet shutter", "bright viewfinder", "compact size", "good finish" are much harder to market compared to "more FPS" "higher max shutter speed" "more AF points".

But in the end I agree, the size of half frame dSLRs with a kit lens is ridiculous, compare that to a PenF.
Which is a shame, because for the target audience (beginners/casual photogs), a compact size, a nice viewfinder and simple uncluttered controls are more important than diving into 3-level deep menus to change between 67 modes of flash sync.

You're all fucking idiots. Film SLRs at the end of the 90s - at least the Canons that evolved into the 6D pictured in the OP - already had a top LCD, function buttons, PASM mode dial and command dial.

Can conform, have a pen f. My only complaints about the camera are no weather sealing, there isn't really a good small 28mm equivalent, some of the heavier lenses are awkward to use on the camera unless you add a grip then they are fine, and the low light performance isn't the greatest. But considering nearly all of my images are downsampled anyway for things like instagram it is fine.

I find that a battery grip complements a mirrorless camera really well. It extends the battery life to be comparable with a DSLR and it helps balance heavy lenses on the camera.

I remember the exact same torch on my Canon D60. I've often mounted a flash gun in dim light for its light grid even when I didn't intended to fire the strobe. Instead of using the torch, autofocus was muuch better.

The main advantage of a battery grip for most people is the "Grip" part, not the "battery" part. Try one out (you can get cheap third-party ones for peanuts on Amazon if you don't want to pop for the genuine article); you might find that it makes shooting in portrait orientation a lot more comfortable.
