Some tips for street in general:
>Dress professionally- it's much harder to get a shitty reaction and get treated like a scumbag when you don't look like one>Don't dress over professional- in those circumstances when you want to illicit a reaction while talking to someone you don't want them on guard, talk friendly and dress smart but casual enough to not make a difference>Look behind them if this makes you feel better- You'll get many people stopping or ducking trying not to ruin your photo but other than that this can be useful for not making people pissed/react after you've taken the shot>>3248750Ignore this. I've had people ask me to pay twice while shooting street. Once an angry homeless guy I was already arguing with and once a prostitute in a literal red light district that's off limits for photography. Unless you're an autistic douche nobody is going to talk to you like this
If you're even at risk of getting arrested then you're not going to be in photography very long- give up and try something else
That said, shooting from the hip is a common piece of advice and it's usually just going to take away from your shot
Another option is wearing headphones while shooting- people are far less likely to ackknowledge or talk to you with headphones in
On planes/trains/lifts and enclosed places you're just going to have to feel uncomfortable- there is no magic pill. Talking to people beforehand might help but also usually puts them on guard and/or posey. I tend to fiddle around with my camera and just remain confident in what I want while being quick. Afterwards I'll show them the shot if it's an enclosed place and tell them a little about what I'm doing. Again, unless you're a creepy fuck you're going to be met with positivity.
Ultimately, self confidence without being a dick is what matters most, as always.
