i got a K-01 real cheap on ebay a few years ago and was actually pleasantly surprised by the sensor. It is by no means worth what they charged at launch but it has served me well for a beater

These days you can get a K30/K5/K5II for a similar price and with many more options to choose from, the K-01 just doesn't make any sense. The only reason to own one is as an art piece if you have a hard on for Marc Newson.

the funny thing is im really not a fan of the design, has a real clunky form over function thing going on. and you are right that a k5 is a much better option. However, the k-01 will occasionally pop up for some weirdly low prices, i got mine with a kit lens for around £200 years ago now

The guy who designed the K-01. He also designed a Leica M that actually looked quite nice that sold for a ridiculous $1.8m.

read the reviews. the sensor is actually better than the competitions. it's a really good camera for the segment. it's just that photographers are visual creatures and it's one hell of an ugly camera.

And you can get the same sensor in better bodies for a similar price. It would make some sense if it was ridiculously cheap, had an EVF, or had a shorter mirrorless mount, but as it is you don't really gain anything from ditching the mirrorbox and lose a lot.

mentioned, the sensor is pretty decent. The form factor isn't really that bad, it's quite endearing and people seemed like to be taken pictures with it when I had one. I 'upgraded' to a X-E1 though because

I'm thinking of getting one as well for my dad, with the 40mm XS it is the perfect compact dadcam. If only the market wasn't full of the banana ones...

It's not that compact if you compare it to an entry-level Pentax DSLR instead of their biggest one, y'know.

The sensor still holds up well unless you're a megapixel whore. There haven't been any strides in ergonomics since then, and K-01 was pretty weird in this regard anyway. Basically the biggest issue is AF, it's kinda slow for static subjects and nearly useless for action (basic CDAF + PDAF optimized or screw-driven SLR lenses = ouch).

Well, that's not their biggest DSLR, but's the one I carry around, usually. I also have a GX10, but the light meter is bonkers on that one.

I'd use the K-01 for "the best camera is the one you have around situtations", i.e. city.

If you have a full frame main camera, lenses aren't going to be properly interchangeable due to FoV change and you'll probably want to get a couple of them specifically for crop - but at that point you might as well get something actually compact like m43.
