I just bought a Panasonic Lumix LX100 for $400 on Ebay. It will be my first camera that isn't a smartphone. What am I in for?

Thanks. I already have a basic understanding of how to use aperture, shutter time, ISO, etc in picture taking but I guess my sort of question is that I don't know what I don't know, so to say.

Why is that lens considered a 24-75mm? That would mean it is a 2.2 crop factor rather than a 2.0 crop factor

Because it doesn't use the entire sensor. In the 4:3 crop mode it has a crop factor of about 2.2, 3:2 is slightly wider and 16:9 even wider still (although of course each is also slightly shorter in height).

I wonder if there's a way to make it read the entire sensor (custom firmware perhaps) and if so at what focal length the lens covers the entire frame.

on most m43 cameras the entire sensor is 4:3. If you shoot 3:2 mode it crops off the top and bottom of the image

Yeah this camera doesn't do that at all, it completely changes the aspect ratio of the image on the sensor. That's why all aspect ratio have roughly the same resolution of a little over 12MP

this camera has a "multi-aspect ratio sensor" in that it crops the sensor in any shooting mode. the sensor stock is 16MP but the most you can get out of it is 12MP

The largest grey box is the full 4/3 16mp sensor, the circle is the image circle produced by the lens (I would guess at the widest focal length) and the blue box is the 4:3 crop (the highest resolution). The pink box is 3:2 and the yellow is 16:9 (there's also a 1:1 square crop that is the same height as the 4:3 one).

That is odd as fuck, I have a Pen F and as far as I know the standard 4:3 is the normal aspect ratio and uses the whole sensor and if I want to change aspect ratios to 3:2, 1:1, 16:9 or 3:4 I am losing mega pixels

That's because your 4/3s lenses can cover the whole sensor, Panasonic managed to make the fixed lens a bit smaller by making it cover a smaller portion of the sensor. Also by cropping the sensor the way they do means there's less resolution lost by doing so (but you don't get to utilise the full resolution of the sensor).

Oh that is weird as fuck. I don't understand why mine has the 3:4 ratio. It is just like, fucking flip the camera 90 degrees. Using the 3:4 removes half of the pixels.
