What weight do you consider as heavy in a lens (or lens-camera combo)?
I just got an 105mm f2.5 Nikkor AI (0.96lbs / 435g) and my arm hurts holding this. My 50mm 1.8AIS (135g) feels like holding thin air compared to this.
Does lifting help not to feel like a chore every time i bring the camera to eye level? (And i always thought the mirorless fags were exaggerating about the weight factor ...)

When I do events and nightlife I hold an 941g lens (Sigma 24-35 f/2) + speedlight with 4 AAA batteries for about 4 hours straight. Sometimes single handed, as I use the flash in the left hand and camera in the right. Only rest is when I move the camera from my hand to my neck. Oh and my camera is a 5d2, but I think camera weight doesn't really matter since pro bodies sit in your hand really well.

I'm a 60kg skellington and I can do it, 435g are lightweight in the lens world, my 100 2.8 IS macro weights 625g and it feels like nothing. There is value to lightweight lenses, but if you can't handle 435g you should man the fuck up.

On a sidenote, yes my right shoulder and my back often somewhat hurts the day after, and my right hand fingers have some pretty noticeable calluses where the camera sits.

But I guess the answer to your question is whatever weight makes you uncomfortable to the point of impeding on your process, whether it's through instability or something else. So you either calibrate your gear as to fit your ideal weight, or calibrate your body as to fit whatever the weight of your gear. Or both.

I find it hard to believe that people have issues with a few grams... your own arm weighs 8-10 lb, so an extra 10% shouldn't make much difference.

My body / lens combo is over 12lb, and I carry it for at least 8 hours at a time, usually more. Check out the wear pattern on the foot from years of hand holding. Not just carrying, but shooting; I use it like a pistol grip, and it only sees a tripod maybe twice per year. No trouble keeping it at eye level for minutes at a time, either.

Be more committed, maybe? Embrace the discomfort?

Shot a 80-400 G VR+D7100 for about 8 hours. Camera hand was rather sore and locking up, but arms/shoulders were ok.

They're actually fairly equal, he just has the bands covering his right wrist making his forearm look bigger as well as the difference in lighting bringing out the definition in the right arm.

Generally, the imbalance of the lens and body is worse than the weight of the lens alone.

That said, I'm pretty comfortable with my 1D and 200mm f/2.8 II

I don't own a "great white" so I don't know how I'd feel with a truly big lens.
