Taking a good photo gives me great satisfaction.
The gear and editing aspect allows me to nerd out.
It's one of the best ways to document your life.
My friends and family love when I share my photos from an event with them.
It gets you out and about, you get to see things and go to places you'd never otherwise experience.
It's accessible.
It's fun.

Im total amateur that only recently got first DSLR but when I was using compact to shoot cosplay events twice and turned out to be the only one who sent the photos once, I felt useful and I like this feeling. That even without skill, I still contributed.

And I kinda want to show people what I see. But it will require far more work to get as good.

I also really enjoy capturing images. I have thousands of photos. Porn, landscapes, movie posters, HR, etc. I love the image. I MUST HAVE THEM!

I used to see things I found interesting and draw them, or draw things I wish existed in some form, but find photography does what I wanted to do much faster. Having an active visual archive of things I found interesting over the years has brought me great joy. I might get back into drawing at some point, though.

Personally I find creative photography is boring and pointless. I like taking cool photos of my family and friends. and things and events that are important to me personally. I also find it fun to use my different cameras and formats. I really find no fun in taking random photos of pointless objects, landscapes etc.

Interesting because I'm the exact opposite. I don't like taking pictures of people. I didn't like drawing them when I still drew a lot, either. It's not that I don't like actual people, I just find no joy in photographing them usually. If someone else can do it for me, great. On the contrary, the stuff I do photograph are things I find interesting. For all I know, years will go by, I'll start a family and do nothing but take pictures of them. But I'm currently enjoying myself, at least for now.

I do enjoy taking self portraits too, but yeah, mostly I feel like I am wasting my film if I take random shots of buildings etc. I mostly do that on digital the few times I actually take those kinds of photos.

I think it helps to actually care about whatever it is you're photographing. Especially if it's a hobby of yours, there's no reason for it to be anything but enjoyable. So if you're not into buildings, landscapes or other inanimate/static/non-human things, it makes no sense to photograph them. If it was your childhood home for example, you might feel differently since it's got emotional significance and isn't really just a "random building". Or you could be interested in architecture, and the building is something your favorite architect designed. I know with a lot of landscape photographers, they talk about environmental conservation and the way mankind is encroaching on what they consider sacred grounds. So often you'll find that people aren't really just shooting "random objects", even if it looks like it. They shot things that they themselves found particularly interesting, or had emotional attachment to.

Yeah, that is completely true. I wasn't exactly trying to shit on people who enjoy creative photography. though I do see how my original post definitely comes off that way. I agree with what you said about shooting things that have emotional significance. which is mostly what I like photographing. and like you said what is most important to me when doing photography is that it's fun. but like I said I also like taking photos that I know will transfer well into a good painting. as I enjoy painting based off of photographs. though I know that sounds pretentious, and that someone before called me a "/ic/ wannabe concept art fag" but I just simply find it to be a fun hobby. I like how it can convey a feeling or mood, a good picture can really capture a moment well. You can feel the temperature and just almost insert yourself in the moment. When I left for college I took pictures of all my stuff packed up and some photos of rooms I used to be in all the time. I still get emotional looking at them and it's gonna be even harder once the house I grew up in is sold. Anyway that's my gay reasoning. I'm by no means a real photographer, I don't even qualify as a hobbyist, I just like it. Also I travel relatively frequently so taking pictures just became a bigger part of my life.

The innumerable variables in lighting, perspective, and the option of settings. Every time I'm in my studio, I feel like it's a continual experiment where I'm learning something new. I've felt this way continually for years. There are so many ways you can light any given object, and they all interact with light differently. Then you can add in atmospheric effects such as smoke or condensation, or continue to observe how things change over time just by leaving them alone. It's just really interesting to me.

Composition and lighting are the only things that have consistently made me happy. Even in my darkest moments, there were still beautiful photos to take. Also the feedback is usually instant, unlike drawing. I guess film isn't instant, but you should know what your shots look like at your exposure before you take them anyway.
