Any tips for doing head shots? A client wants me to do some head shots for her linkedin, and I've never done them before.
Do I just get a white background, have a light on the right side facing the subject, and a mirror on the left side of the subject?
I've never really worked with artificial lights so I have no idea what to expect lol.

Head shots are ez pz, right?

My advice might not be the best tho, since i'm only photographing for 9 Months now and never took a photography class. There are also a couple of "posing tutorials" out there, which i can post if you want.

I'm not quite sure if this is whatever you're looking for, since you might just want some basic headshots (which are boring in my poinion)
Not the best pic, but getting some similar colors worked for me (brown hair, brown eyes, brown leaves in the background)

Are these business headshots or performer's headshots? Soft natural light is awesome for taking portraits, but it'd be a good idea to mix it up and take some shots in natural light and some in studio light, just so your client has a variety of choices.

She said she just wants something that will be visually appealing, she also said she would want to use these head shots for maybe modeling and business cards.

I want to shoot something fun with the lights, maybe get some nice shadows (covering half their face or some shit for my own portfolio, like a mysterious photo)
I just have no experience working with lights and using it to my advantage lol

What industry is she focused in? That might be a better way to decide how to go about her portrait. There are some very standard looks out there for business professionals, too.

Go for it. Shoot a variety of different lighting set ups and poses then. Give you and herself more options to choose from

Sure. Or any muted background. Or even outdoors with some foliage, as long as the background isn't too noisy or distracting.

If it's for Linkedin, just go to a park and whip them out really quick. All you really need is a pleasant background, a slight angle, and some nice clothes.

Maybe I can frame her photo though, like shoot through a tube with her looking at the other end? Or have her stand in between two buildings on a street and put the focus on her.

You're getting way too excited for a simple LinkedIn headshot. It's not exactly the same as a portrait shoot.

Like other anons pointed out, it's worth considering what line of work she is in.

Whatever it is, linkedin generally calls for something muted and simple. Nice soft lighting (I personally prefer natural) either monochrome muted background, or framed by simple elements, whether urban or large office window frames.

The industries where other types of portraits hold more currency (barns, funky coloured backgrounds, riding tree branches and other retarded shit anons used as examples) generally don't do their recruiting on linkedin anyways so that type of output wouldn't have much currency for your client. I certainly wouldn't think twice about hiring her if it's some 'look at how funky and different I am' portrait.

hey man, don't get me wrong, yours are all very decent shots (not my style, I'm way too into my mid-twenties and too much of an autistic snob to personally like those, but I can still appreciate them for what they are); it's just that any potential employer worth their salt doesn't want to see how you strive to "set yourself apart from the rest" through a fucking portrait of all things. Nor would you want to work for an employer who takes that shit seriously.

Right, so take the advice of the anon who posted here for the 'model shots' and freestyle creatively as much as you wish, but keep it clean and simple for linkd. Maybe suggest an outfit/top change as well if she's the one choosing the outfit and plans on wearing a tribal bra or some shit that would work for the model shoot, but not the linkdin one.

Also, what the actual fuck, is she on linkedin as a model? Or is the modelling thing a side-gig?

You don't even need to wait for sunset. Window light is perfect for headshots, just the softest light you can find. Harsh light will cast harsh shadows and make your client's face look all furrowed and weird. You want an overcast day ideally.
