fantastic lens, benefits greatly from the tripod ring (which for some fucking reason it doesn't come with)

I use it mostly for high end work documentation, mantises, and photogrammetry.

It's only a 22 ounce lens. Most camera bodies are heavier than that. What the hell are you doing putting a tripod ring on it? For comparison, the 24-70mm f/2.8 weighs about 34 ounces. This is not tripod ring territory. If the 100mm macro is unbalancing your tripod, then you need a better tripod.

Funny, just sold mine because I never used it for macros and I wanted to move slightly up in focal lenght (I only used it for portrait.)

Bought it slightly used in 2016 for 450€, amazing deal so that's why I bought it, I was looking for an 85 1.4 or 135 f/2 at the time.

Amazing lens, a joy to use, but the fact that I never touched its macro capabilities nagged me. I'm moving to a Sigma 135 1.8 now, as soon as I find one, duh.

OP here. I spent £400 on it and it's only a year or so old. I'm a wedding photographer and wanted to step my game up a bit for the detail shots, namely the rings. Should arrive tomorrow then first wedding to use it is next Thursday.

I'll certainly give it a go as a portrait lens, but I do already have the 85mm f1.2 which I'm quite enjoying.

Almost all of my macro work takes place on a tripod with focus rails. A tripod ring allows for flipping between landscape and portrait orientations without having to reset up everything. This can be essential when working living specimens.

I should've have gotten a 100mm non-L for a really good deal off Ebay, seller cancelled the sale saying it was "out of stock or damaged" and then relisted it a week later with an extra £100 or so tacked on.

I think if I had ended up getting the lens I'd be shooting macro more often, too much time and effort required with my current setup.

It's the only stabilized lens on the market with a macro-capable IS system. Forgot the tech side of it, but it's good for maybe 1 or 2 stops at macro distances.

I'm the guy that used it only for potraits.
I did take some macro distance snapshits from time to time and, yeah, it's good. But really for proper macro work you weant a tripod, the IS is just a good extra.

If you're on a budget there's other options, but this one is just a joy to use in any situation.

I do a lot of bug shit so it may be of use to me, if I didn't normally shoot at 1/500.

I don't think I'll buy one as my enlarger lens seems to be working well.
I'd consider it if they remade the 200mm f/3.5 with it and faster AF.

Good decision, OP. The Image Stabilization is superb but for Macro work you should buy the Lens Ring with Foot and mount it to either a tripod (for indoor work and lowlight work) or a monopod for outdoor daylight work... because if your camera and lens drifts forwards or backwards slightly as you take the shot, your subject will likely not be in focus.

I used an external flash for this picture.
