The wide lenses go a ways back into the body; it's not negatively impacting the design at all. I think they were probably trying to minimize torque on the lens mount, especially with the long lenses.

That's what you get from a f6.3 50mm plastic meniscus lens, prolly stopped down even further for that shot. It's a wonder it's as good as it is. The film plane is even curved to try and make up for how ass the optic is.
