Instagram, like any attention economy, is based not on the skill of the artist, but on how marketable they are. I'd say 2000 of those people following her probably want to bone her or be her, the remaining 1000 probably follow thousands of people. Realistically, using instagram followers as a way to calculate how successful as an artist someone is doesn't really work well unless they're some of the top 1% artists who are making money selling their art, and in those cases they generally use instagram as a place to show off the excess. I've literally seen people following like 30k accounts, the followbacks alone can populate your follower count. Don't be jelly of 3k followers on instagram, eventually fake socialites all go through an inevitable decline or go crazy trying to use words like "clout" to get around paying professionals they use to produce their instagram content.

NOBODY cares about your photography. People care about the person behind the photography. That's why photography YouTubers have huge follows on Instagram. People want to put a personality and voice to the photographs they're looking at to give them value. Detached from that no one gives a fuck.

If the insta is run by someone who is attractive, young, and fuckable then they can bypass all that shit, at least until they get old and someone else takes their place.

If you're in this for attention and recognition on social media get out now unless you have an ultra unique gimmick. Just do it for you to avoid going mad.

It feels good to get validation from people from all the work you put into it.

I have a full time job that pays well. I do photography on the side. I love taking pictures. I want to share my work with other people who look and go "that's neat!"

But not to the point where I'm obsessing with content and clout. I just want people to look at the work I share and go "how neat!" and I want people to get the same enjoyment out of pictures that I do.

I've always wondered, what do most of these kids, and by kids I mean these college students that are anywhere from 18-28, what do they do for work?

This is a serious question, I'm from Eastern Europe, and I see more and more of these types of people popping up everywhere in this age group.

While I was on vacation in America, I met so many of these types of people, boys and girls, and all of them had 5k+ followers, tons of photos on their Instagrams, they were always eating at some super trendy spot or taking expensive vacations, wearing these $1000 outfits, and I honestly never heard one of them say anything about work. Especially in NY and LA. How the fuck is that even sustainable, even if you're running on daddy's money, it just seems ridiculous that at least 10% of the population is like that.
