where can i get my hands on Kodak Aerochrome or some other type of infrared 35mm film? i fell in love with Richard Mosse’s gallery in Congo and need to use it at least once.

You could either get lomography purple which semi-emulates the general look but in purple, or pick a black and white IR film.

You can probably find some expired Aerochrome on eBay in 120

Basically this guy takes the hot mirror out of a point and shoot and then blocks blue wavelengths with a yellow filter. It’s probably better to do it like this than scrounge for old rolls of aerochrome whichll be like $5 a photograph.

the short answer is that you don't

the slightly longer answer is you search ebay and take a chance on the film, or ask every old photographer in town if they have any in their freezer.

the true alternative is that you convert an old DSLR, you can get some of the effect by simply putting an R72 filter on your lens. Though not all cameras are IR sensitive so test your camera with a TV remote first, pump up the ISO in a 1000% pitch black room and shoot the remote at the camera, it the camera picks up the light from the remote it is IR sensitive and the R72 will give you some of the colour IR effect

Get a IR modded a digital camera, use yellow filter, rotate hue 120 degrees.

nah, just doesn't do much for Whitey, in fact lime green would be an improvement.
I knew a photog who shot a Black model with Aerochrome and x-processed it. She turned out porcelain white with bright yellow lipstick but with all of her beautiful African features. very interesting film and effect. In so many ways digital fags don't know what has been lost with the death of film.

Camera sensors are sensitive to IR, that's why almost all have a built in IR block filter. Some models have less effective filter than others, which is better for playing with IR without modding the camera.

I did it with the first cheap camera I found. It's some kind of Sanyo. The hot mirror was held on with a rubber gasket and it popped right off.
Just buy a handful of them and recycle what you don't use.

I like it a lot, so I upgraded to an Olympus Pen e-p2 converted by life pixel.

Hard to believe given how self congratulatory he is in the article, but yeah he’s a fag then. At least partially for his writing style. But either way, at least the article is a good start.

He says many cameras have the mirrors on with adhesives. If you really really have to, you could be super careful and use acetone on the edges of the mirror to try and dissolve the adhesive. Not sure if it would hurt the sensor though. The electronics would probably be fine, but I don’t know what the Bayer filter is made of on most sensors.

the puzzling thing is i saw a canon how to infra, and the guy took some shit out and put inside some sort of black filter inside. meanwhile the easyshare was just taking out the mirror thing. anyways the results from that camera/yellow celophane combo are way better than anything else ive seen, be it dslr conversion or compact. it looks exactly like the real thing.

That black mirror thing might’ve been a cold mirror. It’s literally the opposite of a hot mirror, it only allows IR to pass through. Which is why it looks black, you can’t see through it with visible light.

Assuming the IR block filter in your camera is,
like in cheap Canon P&S cameras, a thin one and not needing a replacement of clear class, and not glued on place, main disadvantage would be you need a IR block filter on your lens for normal photos to avoid purple chromatic aberrations and purple things which should be black.

Also modding may or may not screw your autofocus. Mirrorless or P&S may be better than dslr in that.

Bare in mind that your D80 doesn't have live view and focusing through the viewfinder will be off, AF will also be off unless you have micro adjust.

I might convert my old Canon 20D over the weekend, unfortunately it has neither live view or AF micro adjust so my only option will be to use my few lenses that have IR markings on the focus distance scale (or stop down a lot for a larger depth of field/zone focus).

That's the point, those were good photos independent of infrared film
The problem is when instead of learning to take actually good photo, newbies think they can emulate him entirely by relying on the infrared film, at which point it becomes just a gimmick

I doubt it would look all that different, it's all just steel and concrete. Keep in mind that this is near IR which behaves very similar to visible light, not "heatmap" far IR.
