Get a Nikon F3 if you like SLRs or a Leica M6 if you like rangefinders.

Beware of flea market stuff or the "found my dad's old camera" ads on craigslist. Many of these cameras have been sitting for a long time, so you might end up having to get it professionally serviced should problems arise (clean, lubricate, calibrate shutter speeds and light meter).

I can recommend the om2n from personal experience, really good viewfinder, great metering, shoots aperture priority or manual. If you're looking for a pain free buying experience I'd go with Japanese ebay sellers with 100% reps who are specifically stating the camera's been serviced and prism foam removed.
The 50 1.4 MC in yr pic related is also amazing. Completely free of CA without correction, tiny bit of barrel distortion that I rarely notice unless there are verticals at the edge of the frame.

M6 is the expensive option. I personally recommend the Canon P because it’s above most rangefinders other than the Nikon SP or Leica M series and you can often find good ones for $200. But it’s leica thread mount.

To add, my only complaint is the 35mm framelines are a bit hard to see. But that’s the only downside imo. The upside is that it has a 1.0x finder which means you can keep both eyes open while looking through. Really lowers eye strain. But I don’t recommend using the 35mm framelines if you wear glasses.

You can adapt thread mount lenses to M mount, but not vice versa. Also the M6 has TTL metering.

Stuff that I have and have used regularly .

Minolta Hi-Matic E.
Pro: It's as close to point and shoot as you can get with a manual focus. It has a fucking amazing lens.
Con: Meter is off with modern lithium batteries. It's entirely electronic. It's also a prick to use flash with.

Canon F-1
Pro: Built like a tank. Cleanable and serviceable. Great FD lenses. Fully mechanical. Accessories still around.
Con: Expensive. Fully mechanical. Automatic addons are extra money, and big money on ebay. Flash shoe is an accessory.

Pentax Spotmatic
Pro: Functional. Mechanical. Excellent lightmeter. Works well with modern batteries. M42 Takumar lenses ar good.
Con: Fully mechanical.

Nikon F55:
Pro: DSLR functionality without the D. Cheap as fuck and almost new.
Con: Not an 'old' film camera. But for people who want to shoot film, the early EOS or the like ar probably the best option because they have all the 'modern' automation

Yes, so a thread mount camera is a good starter. The lenses are cheaper usually and can be adapted if you eventually want an M series. A M6 will cost at least $1500 up front and may need servicing bringing the camera alone to as high as $2000 for a good working copy. A canon P can be had for $100, service for $150-200, and a good lens or two for $400.

imo get a lesser known SLR camera like the minolta x300.

Both aperture and shutter priority modes, for relatively cheap, with good cheap lenses at your disposal.

Best of the bunch is the A-1, the first camera to have PASM, the others are fine too but lack functionalities, and the AE-1 Program is overrated and overpriced anyway; there's a plethora of FD lenses, good lenses, out there that can be found for dirt cheap (got a 50mm 1.4 in mint conditions for sixty bucks).

EVERY Pentax Lens will fit it - K mount - and Ricoh so there are literally millions of good quality cheap lenses out there to be had.

Im an Oldfag and learnt the principles of photography using one of these back in 1988 in High School.

I would’ve gotten a R4M but it’s already almost M3/M4 price. It’s like a middle class Leica desu. My canon P is all metal and quite reliable too, though less fancy.

The rubber has started coming off mine. But comparing to a M7, there's many good things about the R2A; for example, the winder stroke is shorter and has better feedback. It served me well through last year's springtime rangefinder fever, and I reckon someone will buy it from me this year.
