Outside the occasional bone I get from someone looking at my insta or a cheap wedding shoot, I can barely find steady work. Anyone else experienced this in working in photography?

How do you reach the full time level with sufficient booking without just spamming out low quality unedited shit to ignorant consumers?

OP for us who choose to work in the arts, initiative and commitment are key. you have to make your own projects and find your own audience, you have to trust your ability to come up with quality material that is attractive, because your skills will not always be required.

well it's too late now anon, the only option is to hustle like a motherfucker. get some corporate clients, because those are the only people that will give you repeat work.

also, if you're freelancing, you're going to have periods of downtime. those periods could last months. you better use that time productively. develop your business, learn new skills, and market like a motherfucker.

That was your first mistake, total waste of time. Clients do not care if you have a degree of a certificate or a membership to whatever. All they care about is what your previous work looks like and what your price is.

I'm a wedding photographer and it's taken me three years to get to the point where it pays my way and I've got some extra to invest in the business.

What I see if all the beginners asking X amount for a wedding. They have no work, so they get no bookings. They drop their price and water down the lower end of the market and so does everyone else. That's called the race to the bottom.

Even once they have a couple of weddings on their portfolio they expect instant results. This is not the case. You need to work at it, offer the client a good deal but don't whore yourself out.

You'll get a good white middle class couple book you. Look after them, get work of mouth and thank them when it happens. Up the price a bit to price out the gypsies, niggers, Irish and general lower class types. You do not want them as your client. Continue to market yourself to the affluent white middle classes and watch your business grow. It takes time and business sense, which few people have.

90% of the value of a photography degree, apart from guiding you and committing your to improve through mandatory practice for assignments, is the connections and internships that you get.

If you didn't network with the right people, din;t attend those shitty events, and didn't get an internship/secondment/insight week/whatever, you wasted most of the employability potential of your degree.

Work like a motherfucker. It's the only way. Shoot any and every job that pays. Under promise and over-deliver, on EVERY job. Treat every customer like they are paying a million dollars. Act like you know what you are doing. Take command with group shots. Strain your creativity until your head hurts. Never work for free. Most of all, do whatever it takes to keep it interesting for yourself, or you will kill your career AND your favorite hobby.
