What can I do to more normal/relaxed when taking pics?

I only ever get this when I'm in a retarded position, like lying on the ground in the middle of the pavement or street

Meditation helps but you'll never get rid of a little awkwardness and fear in candid street photography, learn to deal with it like every other photographer

Some tips:

- shoot older film cameras, people think they don’t work and will act like you’re crazy or a hipster and leave you alone. Leica M2/3/4, Canon P, Fed 3/Zorki 6, Nikon SP are about as new as you want to go.
- if shooting medium format, use something really old and ugly like a Moskva 4 and everyone will be in awe at your camera when in reality they should be in awe of your ability to waste 120 film at such a fast rate
- don’t dress like a weeb
- don’t wear 30 fanny packs
- rangefinder or mirrorless over SLR
- pancake or small prime (think Canon Serenar thread mount series or smaller)
- small prime over big prime
- any prime over zoom
- hand strap over neck strap
- put in pocket after shot over put around neck after shot
- zone focus and then adjust within a second of putting to eye
- put to eye quickly as possible
- don’t let the camera stay out for more than 5 seconds. 3 is ideal
- don’t use flash unless you know what you’re doing (Martin Parr is a modern example who can do flash well)
- grow some balls and realize that street photography is for people who like other people, not some weeb who is still mad at the world because he was bullied in middle school
- self confidence / don’t give a shit attitude

Alternatively, go full Fallout role play and copy Louis Mendes

People in their cars will rubberneck all the time, trying to figure out what I'm shooting/what I'm doing. Or they honk at me cause they're bored and want attention. They might try to talk to me, ask what I'm up to. Or they'll ask for money because camera=rich. Or for directions cause camera=knowing where I am and what I'm doing, apparently.

Oh, to be honest and answering your question, you just have to relax and be normal. Do your thing and don't worry. People do notice, but as long as you're not doing anything wrong, like trespassing for a shot/photographing someone who asked you not to, there's nothing to be all self-conscious about.

Just act confident, be focused on the picture you want, what you have in mind, and work with the tool you have in your hands to make it work.

Use a small rangefinder or mirrorless with a wider-than-50mm prime. Stop down and learn how to zone focus. Then just wait for the moment, get in close, snap and move on.

Of all that, I would say using a wide prime and zone focussing are the most important bits. I get pretty good results using a 14mm manual focus lens on my Nikon SLR. It's not compact, but it works.

sorry for the wall of text. Moral of the story, city councilmen, civil servants, labour unions should be hanged. Labour unions here have priority in dealing with your bosses even when you are not affiliated with them, and even without afilliation, one day of your pay goes to a massive fund that is distributed to all labour unions. I was similar to OP but then I went to Japan and (especially in Tokyo) I found it so easy to take photos in massive crowds because you realise how little anyone cares about what you're doing.

Now I'm back in a quiet place in Australia and I guess I'm not completely different, but far less worried about what people think.
I was out in the city the other day and all I had to remember what that I don't care what these people think because I'll never see them again and if I do, they won't remember me.

If you're gonna take a candid of someone watch where their eyes are first. If they're on their phone or reading a book chances are they won't even notice you. If they do just give a friendly smile and wave. Also use a camera with a quiet shutter.

it`s not about left or right anymore. It`s an oligarchy a few levels below russian levels. I couldn`t give a shit about the politics of it, I just go there because I want to learn to take pics. And protests here attract the kind of people OP was talking about, some pasty white fat guys that are afraid to take pictures and try to shoot without being noticed (like walking normally as if you had your camera turned off, but pressing the shutter etc). I try to talk and help people not get trampled. And the thing I`ve noticed, most left protest photographers are hot young chicks.

About OP, yes, I do the same as you. Talk to people from BOTH sides, when I can help I help, when I can't I help asking from them (when really necessary). Yeah, biased young girls. Had some problems with rich people acting like poor people to get inside riots, or like Media Ninja, which stage an act to force their views for fake news.

Just act natural, and blend with the people in the street. When you have to deal with 'sides', neutral colours so you can't be in trouble for wearing blue in a red rampage.

Like the other anon said, you have to get in uncomfortably close, like 2 or 3 feet from your subject.

I often just set my focus to the distance I want to aim for, and shoot from the hip, or the knee in the case of dogs. Sometimes the composition works, and sometimes it doesn't.

I find using a TLR for street is fantastic. I use a Rolleiflex 2.8c and the waist level composition not only makes lining up verticals easier, but also has people thinking you are just playing around with an old camera. No shutter sound audible.
