These are not good photos, and don't fall under the category of snapshot, snapshots tend to be of things we like and are very subject orientated, photos of family, cherished possessions, views seen whilst on holiday, etc. And it's this personal level of attachment that give them such charm and validity.

These are just poorly composed, ill-thought out photos, showing zero technical or artistic competence with a garish gimmick applied to try to mask your inability to take a photo or tell a story.

It's ok for the photo/composition to convey a different emotion when presented in a way you didn't compose it for and didn't optimize for (B&W vs color). It's also ok for the composition to suffer even, when presented in a way it wasn't optimized for (B&W).

But is the composition completely VANISHES the moment you convert to B&W, it means it wasn't there to begin with. You can make a good photo different, or slightly worse, by converting to B&W. But you can't make it utterly terrible if you just convert it, it must've been pretty weak to begin with.

Honest question, how do you feel about your photo in B&W?

Also known as gimmick. The 'entirely' part is what makes a gimmick, i.e. there's nothing else to it other than that. Even photos with strong color contrast, can still stand on their own.
Because they're well composed at their core, and the color adds to the composition.

If color is the ONLY compositional element, that makes it a one-trick pony, aka a gimmick.

You might wanna call it digital art, since it's about just colour, and artificial one at that. But if you want to call it photography and be judged by photography's standards, they're simply weak and ill-composed photos that don't evoke anything in particular.

1. Rothko still works in B&W, pic related

2. If you're talking about rothko's color field work, then his colors were carefully chosen and matched together based off that pictures source of inspiration, he didn't throw the same lurid shade of pink at every picture, to compare your 2 "styles" is pretty offensive to rothko.

3. Just admit, it doesn't matter what criticism is offered, or who offers it, you're never going to listen. Consider this for a moment, you've been "trying" to be a photographer for 15 years, and it still hasn't happened, do you not think it's time you went back to school and started listening to people.

Imagine if you met someone who was mad keen on playing the guitar, and they had been doing it consistently for 15 years and telling everyone about how great they are. But in reality, they just keep playing smells like teen spirit and when suggested it's time they move forward, they hiss and scowl and say "nirvana were a very succesful band so I can surely get success from playing the same songs".

This would all be funny, if it weren't so sad.

Or did you just try to draw a parallel between your PHOTOS and an abstract painter's PAINTINGS? Why stop there, let's draw parallels between your filenames and some poetry and literature too while we're at that.

The fact that you can't support your argument even when drawing from an incredibly rich body of photographic work and that you have to resort to abstract painters, proves my point.

Yes, many "strong photos" have the kind of composition that transitions well into b&w, but a "strong" colour image does not necessarily need to tick that box. It can be just as strong for various other reasons. There's not only one type of image and the quality of an image isn't a compound sum of all its individual elements, so taking away a composition that works well both in colour and bw doesn't necessarily make it less of a good image.

All this being said, while I do believe it to be true in a hypothetical discussion in a photography seminar, it doesn't have anything to do with OP's work which does not hold up in colour, or bw.

Also, the black and white photos OP posted to prove she understands that bw does require to think of composition differently (which she has done successfully btw, since some people here seem to have lower IQs than a rural Albanian porch rodent) are far better than her colour work. I really do think that she should abandon this meme that she got herself into, or consider bringing it to a close in a tidy, well curated series. Spending a lifetime on the same type of image for the sake of symbolic documentary making, or whatever you'd want to call this, would be a waste of time in this case. white balance set in camera has zero effect on the raw image.

to achieve this effect, use a flash with a coloured gel to highlight the foreground, then adjust the white balance to compensate so the areas lit by coloured flash look "normal", and the rest of the images colour is shifted.

Totally disagree. These are on a different level than we are accustomed to. If I am right it is a film technique that uses a color gel on the flash and an opposite color on the lens. It can be done with digital or film but is usually film, although I haven't seen examples of it since the 1980s. Good use of an obscure technique to create thougt-provoking images, if you ask me.

I did some number crunching for you, the most recent gear thread has 15 out of 221 posts uncapitalised, yours I've spotted 28 not including the ones including your trip, that's 28 out of 95 posts (not counting replies with images, which are definitely yours) a bit of quickmaffs shows that in the gear thread there's around a 7% incidence of stupidity but in yours we're up at 30%!

Seems like more than an anomaly to me, it looks like their may be one person pretending to be many different people!

I don't think you've got a very accurate impression of her simply because your only interactions have been her disregarding your critique based on your work, and it's put you on the defensive.

I like you, Giannis, you've helped me in the past with my film questions, but isi is genuinely more creative and artistic than you are, and I can understand her choice to ignore your comments. She's not a film shooter and you're not an expressive photographer. You have little in common.

It's the opposite. I don't mind mentioning her photos that I like, giving critique etc. I've done so many times in her threads. The problem is, she throws a fit everytime. It's not even about me, she does the same with everyone. She can't take critique for shit.
The argument of "I have to like your work to take your critique" is really disappointing, especially from someone that was "formally educated" in Arts.

Subject by itself only represents potential. It's about what *you do* with you subject that defines if that potential is turned into something good or if it's wasted.
So no, models are not the easiest subject because by itself it has no value unless you create an interesting composition out of it. Just like a snapshot of Yosemite by itself has no value despite the "interesting" subject matter, and it took Ansel Adams to make it world famous.

Lastly, if you're gonna reply to saged posts in the middle of the night, at least have the decency to put your trip on.
