I got one, and I think it's the best prosumer camera in the FD mount system since it's the only to have PASM in such a tight and sturdy package (the T90 has more functionalities but it's a behemoth and it's made of plastic and is prone to failure).

The only real complaint I have is that in manual mode, in the viewfinder, it displays the aperture it thinks you should use, and not the ones you've set, but you can always turn off the LED. Another minor issue is the poor ergonomics of some dials, but it's not a dramatic problem, and you have to keep in mind it was made 40 years ago. Last but not least, the viewfinder, which is very bright, doesn't fully cover the frame (93.5% vertical and 95.3% horizontal); for me it's not a deal breaker, for some might be.

If you already have some FD lenses, then consider getting one, otherwise the Minolta XD-7 is a great alternative.

No idea on Minolta MD lenses, I only have researched Canon FD lenses: they seem plentiful and cheap, some are really well regarded. I already had a 35-70 f3.5-4.5 and a 75-200 f4.5, which nobody seem to like and sell for 30~50€ on ebay; I then I bought a 50mm f1.4 for 60€ which is a great lens. If you want something fancy, like superfast primes (50mm f1.2) and other exotic lenses (like 35mm tilt-shift), prices go up to hundreds of euro; I'm currently aiming to buy a 28-85mm f4 as a walk-around jack of all trades lens, which sells for around a hundred euro (there's also a 35-105mm that sells for slightly less, but I'm not interested in that range). These are the sort of prices you can expect.

I own one along with an ae-1p, an FM and an F3.
I'd say the a-1 is the best fd camera that i've used, and the led data readouts are really nice, but it falls flat on it's face in comparison to any nikon camera from the time.
Made me realize how nice it is for the camera's meter to stay on without having to hold the button down all the time, and how having reserve speeds, useable manual exposure and depth of field preview make photography so much more effortless.
Additionally the flash system for the a-1 is shit, but i don't think many people do flash photography with film any more.

The A-1 has DoF preview and stopped down metering. The A-1 when paired with a flash through the hotshoe automatically switches to the appropriate shutter speed, which I think it's nice. For the led screen you need to keep the shutter half pressed, but you also have a button on the side of the lens mount that you can keep pressed to keep the readout always on; it's not very ergonomic to use, but again it was the late '70s.

Out of curiosity, what is in your opinion the best Nikon counterpart to the A-1?
