The 7D is a much more relevant camera. It is intended to be the APS-C equivalent to the 5D Mark II -- like, this is what you get when you focus on burst shooting speed and pixel density. The 5D Mark II would give you better low light shooting and a full frame image circle.

I would not buy an original 5D unless you are absolutely certain of the compromises you're getting. These cameras had a shutter recall early on and if a camera didn't get serviced, it may be too late at this point. Even if you get one that is mechanically sound, the resolution is diminutive and most of all, the rear screen is too low resolution to use effectively. You will always have times when you get home and you're surprised you missed focus.

Don't listen to autists who complain about your thread. These are the same people who shit up the /gear/ thread with 120 posts of ragging on brand X of lenses while refusing to out themselves as a fanboy of brand Y of lenses. Then they act surprised when people don't want to post in those shitholes.

The 5D is the best option then. Give it a 50mm or a 85mm and you get an awesome kit for portraits and general use. What you will miss will be the lack of live-view and auto-Iso.
The 7D is better than your 350D, but the 5D is a real upgrade. Sage anyway.

Heard about mirror problem and that's a downer. Sensor resolution is not a big problem for me and rear screen is actually a big upgrade from tiny unuseable one in 350d.
I am more concerned about crop factor - I tend to switch between film and digital bodies during shoots and inconsistency in effective focal lengths really annoys me.

Still not bad. I still use mine as my primary camera. The only downside is that Capture One doesn't support tethered shooting with it so I have to use my a7 for studio stuff.

I said the following things:

Although the latter point is a bit incomplete, I'd say that it implies various things, such as the ability to use FF zoom lenses without compromises to their utility, and the ability to get a thinner depth of field for a given magnification and f-stop.

Get the 5d. I have the 600d and the 7d, and it's basically the same camera. I end up using the 600d more because of the swivel screen. The only time I'm using the 7d is for video purposes, because of Magic Lantern.

As some other anon said, the 5d would be an upgrade, the 7d would just be better.

It's not so much about DoF, rather than consistency with film bodies in terms of field of view, as I mentioned before (I have a canon EOS film SLR and use the same lenses)

Also, I found 5dm2 with 170k shots for not much more than typical 5dm1. The lens mount button is broken off (the outer plastic part) otherwise it's fine (at least seller claims that). Worth considering?

Hover above the image to switch between the cameras. The 5d has better ISO performance of the two, but obviously 5d mark ii is the best.

The 5D image is smaller. If you view at same scale it's closer. The 7D is sharper but the 5D has cleaner patches.

But there are so many disadvantages with the 5D...go a 5D2 at least if you must have FF.

Anybody know how these images are made? Is it a 100% crop at a certain number of feet away or is it made so that card fills the image? It shows a lot of detail loss at IS 3200 on the 5DII, but I owned that camera and detail was very usable even at ISO 3200.

Megapixels are less important then most think, ESPECIALLY FOR PORTRAITS! but even in that regard 5D is AT LEAST on par with 7D. 5D has pixel perfect sharpness with is unobtainable on APS-C cameras with regular lenses.

People who quote dxoshit are autistic. The only test they perform that has any meaning or is remotely consistent with user experience is their DR test. Everything else is shit.

Their "equivalent megapixel" lens tests are a well known joke. I guarantee you that a 7D with either of those lenses can resolve more line pairs than the 5D.

This is a well disproven meme.

5D's one portrait advantage vs. 7D is more shallow DoF which is most relevant with f/2.8 zooms. A fast prime on crop will give you all the shallow DoF you need. I still say used 5D2 if you must go FF because at this point the 5D's body/feature set are so antiquated.

This is a pic of mine that I took with my Canon 60D and a 18-55 kit lens. It's nice but how come I see so many sharp and detailed clear pics but mine are not as sharp as those :( Can you see it gets a bit blurry in the windows or whatever. is it the camera or the lens? What you’re seeing is the difference between a hand held, high iso shot and a base iso shot, quite possibly on a tripod, of a better lit scene that was then well processed.
You can get better pics by improving the light you shoot in and technique.

Sharpness != resolution. It's trivial to sharpen up a crop image to match. Except at high ISO where this accentuates noise.

Nikon lenses are just not comparable to Canon, when compared in aggregate. There are exceptions, but I wouldn't want to own a Nikon body except as a second camera with a specific purpose in mind that I knew the lens lineup was capable of providing.

There are a few things you can do. I took this one from the middle observation desk on that Tokyo Tower in your image.

The window reflections can be mitigated by
1. being careful with your position, trying different angles, having your lens be as straight against the glass as possible
2. putting your jacket or some object around the edges of your lens so the reflections are blacked out and don't appear

you'll get less blur by

1. having a camera that can take in enough light to shoot at a fast speed (wide aperture, full frame sensor, able to shoot at high ISO without as much noise)
2. being able to set the camera on a mini tripod or resting on a shelf of some sort

I had plenty of blurred or unusable shots, but this is one of the best I could get. The camera was resting on a chest-high ledge and it was more or less straight against the glass. This was at the lowest ISO of 100 because it was an eight second exposure

I got this on a basic 600d with a kit 18-55 and kit zoom (80mm). Also post processing is important but that's another subject

7D for action 5D for literally everything else.
The original 5D is bar none the best deal in digital photography. The only reason to get the 7D is if you shoot a lot of sports/wildlife/action and/or have a lot of crop lenses you don't want to upgrade.

Do you want comfort and usability? Get 7D. Otherwise, you can go for 5D. I've never used 5Dmk1, but it's not difficult to imagine how bad it is when you compare it to modern higher-end devices (like 7d) with fast processors, superior af systems, big displays, fast bursts, and other comfort-related stuff like that. I've switched from 350d to 50d some time ago, the moment i've took 50d in my hands i realized that camera is much more than just the sensor.

But ultimately, get whichever you like more. Both of those cameras won't get any cheaper anytime soon, so you can for example buy 5d and sell it for the same price as you've bought it if you decide you don't like it. Liking your camera is important.

not to mention those places (looks like it's from mori tower) don't like tripods. you can get away with it in world trade center but all the good spots the glass is all marked up. otherwise, improvise.
