You can still print negative film optically on RA-4 paper, the papers and chemicals are available, while for wet positive printing (cibachrome process) they're long gone. Lastly, processing is cheaper (due to popularity, not that the process is any easier or simpler).
The disadvantages of negative film, is it cannot be projected like slides, and since you have to invert it, there's more room for error in colour and white balance in the inversion process.
The advantages of slide film, is higher contrast and saturation, usually smaller granularity (improved sharpness), and it can be projected.
