I do a lot of photogrammetry of mantises. The process is a pain in the ass and would come out a lot better if I could realistically focus stack the subjects. I saw a set up from gigamacro when I lived in SF that could be pretty easily set up to do it and rotate the model (instead of translate it like their current system does). The one guy there had actually started messing around with it but that was 4 or more years ago and I don't think he ever did anything with it.
I use agisoft and meshmixer predominantly. Most of this is self taught so there's probably plenty wrong. In terms of sparse and dense clouds I refine the sparse cloud to remove errors, optimize the cameras, and then generate a dense cloud to make my mesh.
