Hey, any wedding photographers/videographers?

Short version

>doing my first wedding video (unpaid) next week
>need inspiration and advice

Long Version

A friend of mine shoots weddings (stills) for a living and he's been telling me for a while to join him. Since I do video work for a living, we could team up for some jobs.

Anyhow, he talked to the bride, told her about me and since she doesn't want to spend too much, he offered her free video work if she didn't mind having me do it as a trial run.

I agreed, and I'm doing it next week.

I'm looking for advice and inspiration on wedding videography, and some insight if there are any pros on here.

It's a friend of mine and it's a wedding. He is buying me beers afterwards. I don't know about you but I hate people that go 'oh yeah I could do that' with zero experience, no matter the cost and then produce shit results.

I don't really need the money right now and I'm seeing if this is a kind of business I could get into. I'm not putting any of my own equipment or post work.

I understand what you mean though.

don't listen to them, if you actually had 0 experience in it you can work for free on your first time. If you fuck up (very likely since is your first time) you are covered, if you do good they will suggest you to all their friends. Don't underestimate the job tho, it's very boring, frustrating and tiring.

for the Inspo, definitely check out PHILIPPE WHITE (http://www.philipwhiteweddings.co.uk) as being the best wedding video maker I have ever seen

also check out www.studiomagenta.it (where I worked for a year), don't know if they still have some wedding video up still but it's a good Inspo for the mood

If it's his first time and he has no idea what level of quality his results will be, I think it's fair to charge nothing. Once you know what you can produce, you can start estimating a price.

Wedding photographer here. Don't just obsess over the gear and the work. If you're serious about making money from this you need to be charming and friendly to your clients and their guests and even the venue staff. Make a bit of small talk, leave a good impression as it goes a long way.

Know what you NEED before you go to the shoot.

Have an idea of what you want to get, but don't need, before you go to the shoot, too.

This is a wedding, you can't tell the bride to walk down the aisle a second time. So if you want a shot of the audience looking towards the front of the church, but also want a shot of the bride coming down the aisle, you're going to need to figure out how you're going to do that before you get there.

I do plenty of video work on my own, and there is a bunch of on the fly stuff that goes on. But you have to know what you need before you go in or else it will be a huuuuuuuge gong show.

you're probably going to get a ton of people telling you that you shouldnt work for free (well you shouldnt) but honestly, if you wanted to give weddings a go, this is the best way. since you have an experienced wedding videographer at your side, treat it like a free workshop

Yea fuck that list. You're going to waste a lot of time looking hrough it. You don't have to get every shot at a wedding, focus on the really important ones. Most of those are just going to happen anyway.

you should find a series of videos, and cross examine it with shotlists like the one above (keyword shotlist, google that shit wedding shotlist). at the wedding shoot what is interesting but get the shots on your list rain sleet hail snow. bring extra batteries, find a spot to charge your shit away from everyone else or with a trusted party (bride groom senpai etc). be hella critical of what you come out of it with. you'll feel good no matter what you produce, look at your work then at the work of someone who charges the kind of money that would allow you the flexibility to have the gear, the office, the life that you want. now figure out how to close some of those holes. do this for a month if you want, maybe even for two, but the second you can execute this on your own you shouldn't be showing up to anything for less than 600usd just to be there. good videographers charge a lot, when you stop being able to see the difference between your work and someone elses go to an unbiased third party and show them both options, ask which is better and how much they would pay, this is a reality check. also be personable and make connections, you'll need to sell yourself.

Do it for free for friends/friends-of-friends who had no plans/budget for a video. You get a wedding to practice with. They get a video, and even if it sucks, all it cost them was an extra plate of food. If you're lucky, maybe the bride's mom will slip you some cash out of guilt.

OK now I know why people don't shoot peoples weddings. First off he said he did not want any photos shared online of them. I said I would ask for permission to use a few for promo shots if I needed to.

Now I just got a text that there is a 7 year old girl and I am not allowed to keep any shots with her in them.

I just replied that she is either in them or not and the parents need to stop listening to PC idiots. I'm thinking of telling him I won't be doing it. I was due to attend Friday. I can see why this shit breaks up friendships. I had tried to put him off multiple times and eventually caved. I should have just said no and left it at that.

I gave him a good dressing down and made him apologize. I told him I don't believe this came from him and 'someone' put the idea in his head. He just didn't think it through. So he now knows that I know who put that idea there and I won't be putting up with any of 'their' bullshit. But after he pays the expenses and gets some processed copies I will probably not contact him again. Unless he comes to me first.

Well the shoot went ahead. I made a heluva lot of first time mistakes. But I also learned a lot from it. Luckily I had a professional videographer on hand to help me out. Apart from the technical issues the bigggest problem I found whilst processing over the weekend was that people don't follow instructions. They had been told time and again by the videographer to look at me and not at him for the group shots. Where were they all looking? Over my left should at the videographer most of the time.
Not a lot I can do about that since I appear to be 'that dude who is just taking snaps'. So fuck it.
Shooting the wedding itself was the hardest part. No flash or LED lighting allowed. Cramped space. Strong backlight from sunshine through a window behind the couple. I ended up shooting on F1.4 at 30mm and processed b&w.
I also fucked up on some group shots shooting far too wide. Oh well. He still has about 200 usable shots so If he complains he can take a hike.

Never again...until the next time.

Here's one of the few I am probably allowed to share (and if not I don't really care). The videographer looks as pissed as me.

You need to be able to command people to pose and block. Sort of like a director. My mom does it pretty well and she shoots 18year old galas all the time.
