Show me any photo that you think is "powerful" despite being badly composed and I can probably point out to you how the photographer actually did use good technique to make the shot work. i.e. in this one

Learning how to compose, expose etc. is not just about getting the "perfect" shot it's about simply being able to say one thing instead of another thing, it's about knowing what impact the shot will have depending on choices made behind the camera, and any seasoned photographer is making those choices.
