Contax/Yashica Bodies Guide

No.3296191 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
Okay boys, here's a niche thread. Have you ever wanted to shoot those cheapish Zeiss SLR lenses but never known a fucking thing about the C/Y mount? Here's the thread for you.

Ranked by Reliability
1. Contax S2/S2b (Fully Mechanical, meter only)
2. Yashica FX-2, FX-3, FX-3 Super 2000, FX-7 (Fully Mechanical, meter only)
3. Contax 139 Quartz (with a serial of 150,000 or higher), 159MM
4. Contax RTS II, RTS III, Aria
5. Yashica FR, FR I, XF-D
6. Essentially all other C/Y bodies mainly due to bad electronics

Ranked by Price for working example
1. All Yashica Bodies (extremely cheap, $20 or less)
2. Contax 137 (~$40, Completely electronic and hilariously unreliable)
3. 139 Quartz, RTS I (~$60)
4. 167 MT (~$90)
5. 159 MM (~$110)
6. RX I, ST (~$150)
7. RTS II (~$200)
8. RTS III (~$240)
9. AX (~$280, Ridiculously complex and unreliable autofocus system that moves the film plane)
10. Aria (~$320, Matrix Metering)
11. S2/S2b ($350)
12. RX II ($370, Last C/Y body made in 2002)

My personal recommendation is to go with the Yashica FX-3 Super 2000, or if you don't want a plasticy experience/insist on shooting a Contax body, the 139Q. If money is no object, The S2 or the Aria.
