Your pic for example uses pretty standard 19th century ideas- dark background for emphasis, distant background (though not nearly as distant as was common) blending together with the foreground, bright light subjects with ultra soft light and colour/brightness for draw/attention. The tilt shift doesn't work for me but it helps what he's going for
There are plenty of little things you can worry about but the basics always have been and always will be the same as photography- good soft light and focus with tons of separation and isolation
Flower photography is a good place to start if you're new because it's a lot simpler, very similar and you don't have to worry about your subject
