Pixel 2 is the current king, but generally whatever current-gen top-tier smartphone you buy will have a terrific camera.

MKBHD just did a smartphone camera comparison on his channel that is super good if you want to watch it.

A decade old DSLR (even cropped sensor) will out perform any current cellphone camera. Even the Iphonex. All for $200-300.

Personally I own a Canon 450D (12MP Sensor) that I got $150 with a kit lens included on ebay. Currently looking at the Canon 650D as it has DIGIC 5 video encoding and a 18MP sensor. These are Canon APS-C cropped sensors which are smaller and cheaper than the larger Full Frame cameras. Lenses are also much cheaper on cropped sensors. Full frame, including older second hand cameras, are not for those looking for a bargain and can cost a premium.

Well I went from a point and shoot to the Canon 450D, so I would just recommend the most expensive Canon Rebel you feel like buying.

The go to advice is to buy a Sony A6000 or an Olympus E-M10 Mark II (currently very low in price), that way you have a very portable and slim mirrorless body with a lot of lenses to choose from.

don't buy a canon anon, get a used Nikon d80 + 50mm lense and you're golden. Pic related was taken with it. It will satisfy your photography needs for around 200-250 bucks

I would look for a $60-100 dollar camera body and a $100-140 dollar lens. Glass is usually more important than a body.

Oh yeah, that reminds me. If you're looking for a dirt cheap point-and-shoot with good image quality, a sigma DP2x is good. They're usually around $250, but if you wait you might find a cheap one.

As for DSLR models, basically any APSC Canikon (or Fuji) made after 2005 should be acceptable.
