5Dc vs D700

Anons I'm planning to either buy a used pro model for cheap
Seen a Canon 5Dc for $350 and couple of Nikon D700 for $500 on our online classifieds site
What do? Want it primarily as a hobby camera to do general photography mostly portraits but also astrophotography occasionally
Also I prefer Nikon, have a D3200 that I've currently put up for sale
Was thinking I'll buy the Canon, use for sometime and try to sell for the around the same price even though I want a D700

Man, the 5D is not that good as a FullMeme camera. The Nikon D700 is far better and still good. Had to upgrade mine this year because I need video capability, otherwise I would stick with mine.

Does the weight bother you?
How is the image quality, I know MPs are meme but how different is it compared to my D3200?
Does it have a type I or type II CF card slot?

a little, won't lie. But the D700 is built like a tank and can handle every kind of environment and temperature (mine had take -20˚ to +38˚C), never had any problem and the shooter can go on and on.
Image quality is very very good for a 2008 camera! The DR is good, the ISO is very usable at 6400, and it's type I CF card. So you can still find some good CF very affordable.

It's a huge upgrade from a D3200. You'll like it's JPGs colours profile a lot and you'll notice how you can handle the RAW files better when editing.

I just bought a D700 a few weeks ago and I'm really enjoying using it. It is fucking big and heavy which is the only major downside for me but that comes with most professional DSLRs. I just like being able to use cheap junky D and Ai lenses with the full frame sensor so I'm satisfied with it for now.

You can adapt Nikon lenses to them easily and the split-image focus screen from the 80's Nikon F cams (FE, FM, F3 etc.) are direct drop ins with no modification and even my Df can't do that (major fail Nikon) The image quality is very good even by today's standards and I did some of my absolute best ever work on one, while I was covering the end of the Space Shuttle program, a 5Dc was my workhorse through that whole fiasco and the pictures of Atlantis I did rolling out at night were good enough to where they get reposted here from time to time.

HOWEVER

The D700 comprehensively steamrolls it in literally every aspect except pricepoint. It's a D3x in a smaller body. There is not one thing the 5Dc can do that the D700 can't do better, and if you're already on a Nikon system the answer is obvious. Until the recent onslaught of entry-level and mid-range FX bodies those D700's were still well north of 1200 dollars only a couple years ago so for 500 bucks I would say jump on it.

tl:dr; they are both good cams but the D700 curbstomps it.

You can get a 5DII for verging on $500 and it is still an excellent, well rounded camera. Downside is unsophisticated AF. The 5D II is a gargantuan step forwards in functionality and usefulness in comparison to its predecessor.
