/p/ let's address the real question.

HOW DOES ONE LEARN PHOTOGRAPHY

Classes, lectures, youtube videos, natural talent etc.

Countless ways for countless people. I've only been shooting SERIOUSLY for two years. I'm not great, done a wedding or two, don't have an insta and I frequently take shit shots that I think are good.

I'm starting to get a bit discouraged so I was curious how do YOU learn photography /p/? Let's inspire and encourage each other.

Look at good photography to learn what good photography is, you should be investing more into gallery visits and photography books than new equipment

I like street stuff and nature stuff quite a bit. Not necessarily landscapes though if that makes sense. I also like taking pictures of interesting man made things, bridges, train tracks, interstate over passes. Stuff that illustrates man like building something great.

in general I'd recommend watching Ted Forbes' stuff on youtube, he does some pretty good deep dives on specific photographers as well as techniques

Street a lot of the time is an extension of photojournalism so I'd recommend Gilles Peress, W Eugene Smith, Josef Koudelka as a few photographers to start with, Sebastiao salgado would be a crossroads of photojournalism and landscape work that you might like, at least his early work was like that. Obvious look up the greats of photography, henri cartier bresson, ansel adams.

Architecture and photographs of industrial equipment isn't something I know much about but you could read up on the blast furnaces series by the Bechers

The photographers eye by Michael Freeman is a good book to get you started with, it'll hold your hand through analysing composition of some decent pictures. I'd also recommend 'how to read a photograph' by Ian Jeffrey.

Don't let people fool you into thinking there is some magic involved in making brilliant photography, there is a certain element of luck but you will learn how to make your own luck over time. most revered "magical" photographers are only called such because they're dead and can no longer tell people to fuck off and stop hyping up their work to sell it for more.

That'll come and go, try work on projects to keep you focussed. Keep two or three going at anyone time, that way you wont feel guilty for not knowing what to photograph. Same applies to a lot of things in life, have a plan then you wont be wandering around aimlessly

Not OP, but I'm interested in this topic. While looking for that book I found that its subtitle referred to digital photography. I currently shoot film (started using my father's Canon A-1 to take personally valuable pictures, can't really afford to get a DSLR, so I'd like to learn to take better pictures because film and development ain't free): is there anything older, written with film in mind, or is the digital thing just a marketing pitch and it doesn't really make a difference?

it's only in reference to post processing sections of the book, how to crop or adjust highlights. How to meter etc will all use digital terminology. It will all make sense to you if you've used any editing software on scanned copies of your images.

I learned like this.

buy a Nikon D300 in 2008

took a couple pictures with it and put it in the closet for a decade.

flash forward to 2018... I really wanted to take pictures again for some reason.

Got the old D300 out of the closet and ordered new batteries. Was shocked it still worked flawlessly.

Spent the last month obsessed with photography. Took 10,000 pictures that month. Every day I took at least 300 photos. At night I would sit at my PC and shoot while adjusting settings, messing up the settings, resetting, and setting it up again. I did this over and over and over till I knew every single one. I watched videos, read the manual, investigated the autofocus white balance and metering settings.

Now a month later I know my camera inside and out. Each day I learn a little more. Muscle memory set in, I instantly adjust settings on the fly while shooting street photos. I feel confident now.

All you have to do is put in the time and find a passion for it.
