I bought a Chinese phone my friend recommended expecting the camera to be terrible.

These actually look quite nice to me, but I was hoping for some opinions from people who actually use cameras as well.

How would you rate the camera in my phone? I'll be uploading several samples

Perhaps it's a negligible amount greater than 1/20 but why wouldn't it just quote it as 1/20?

Because Meizu is Mediatek trash from what I remember, Xiaomi at least use big dick Snapdragon processors. I don't think anybody really talks about Meizu seriously.

Looks like any other phone camera.

(relatively expensive) Meizu models do have good cameras. They also usually have somewhat better materials and feel nicer in hand. MTK is still fine if person don't play some mobage. But i prefer Xiaomeme myself. Plus their latest top phones have fantastic cameras.

Your photos is fine, don't worry about it. Seems like Pro 7 Plus camera is very good for everyday life, when you just can't take dslr with you.
Sometimes people just got overly defensive against phone camera, since there is lots of "dslr is not needed iphone make better shots" retardism.

Would a standalone camera really be so much better?
If I bought a used high end DSLR or similar for around 800-1000 dollars will it be twice as good as the Meizu?

You get a DSLR or mirrorless because you want full control over all settings (aperture/shutter speed/ISO) and the option to change lenses for certain situations. For instance a low f-stop lens to throw out the background or a telephoto zoom if you're doing landscapes. In short, it's for people who are knowledgeable and serious about what they want out of their photography. If you're perfectly happy taking snapshits in auto mode with your chink phone then stick with that. You can always download an app like Open Camera to give you some manual control to see how it feels or experiment.

To be honest, a camera is only as good as the lens attached to it so asking if the camera is twice as good is pointless since the quality could rise or fall depending on the lens. Newbs always seem to think the camera body is what is important when it's very much the quality of the glass in front of it that matters.
