Do you have a favorite focal length? I have been shooting with 50 mm for couple years, and bought a 35 mm half a year ago.
With 50 I find myself all the time wanting a slightly wider lens because something wont fit.
But now once I got 35, while I don't want a wider lens anymore, I find it harder to make an appealing composition!
Is it because I just got used to 50 more or is 35 more difficult to compose with?

If I was a professional photographer, working for a client, that requires specific results from me than this analogy would work for me.
I'm a hobbyist, and I take photos for fun. I don't have specific predetermined requirements.
Don't great photographers like Bresson or Adams, have a favorite focal length that they liked to use the most?

anyway I have a 50mm on Canon's crop sensor. I like it, but find myself always having to walk away from my subject. I want a 35mm. until then I guess I can't answer your question very well.

I'm usually very confortable with anything between 28 and 50 equivalents on full frame, but I have one of those 12mm ultra wides in my Fuji and I've got some mileage out of it too. Anything longer than full frame 50 is strictly portrait territory for me, it feels like i'm sniping my subject instead of taking a pic of it whenever I use it outside.

That's what I'm talking about. With a 35 it is harder to hide all the unwanted stuff from a photo. With a 50 it is easier to make a clean composition. At least to me.
And easier to achieve better subject separation.

I don't contradict that.
But op says he's done shots with 50 mm and wasn't satisfied because it was too narrow. Then he did shots on 35 and found it uncomfortable.

What are we supposed to say here other than, when your 50 mm is too tight, take another and vice versa?
A lens is a tool. If you like the tool but it doesn't fit you take another.

But yea, maybe it's just a matter of getting used to a new focal length. I've only had it for few months. I spent much more time with a 50.

I like 110mm on 6x7

40 is really nice for a 1 lens kit. It is just wide enough to not disappoint in most cases.

I love my loxia lenses. Once I got to use them for a little bit, I pretty much gave up on autofocus. Focusing manually is so enjoyable and rewarding. Even though I miss a shot more often than I would with auto focus, the process itself is so much more enjoyable that I'm just going to stick with manual lenses.

As someone who has a 50mm and 35mm I think both of them are lacking, the 50 is sometimes too tight in scenarios and the 35 sometimes isn't wide enough. I do own a 28mm but it's for a camera that's currently broken so I haven't used it yet, but from looking through the viewfinder with it I think it's a perfect fit to replace my 35mm. And as for my 50mm I'm looking to get a 40mm.

So in conclusion:
40mm for everyday use
28mm if I want something a bit wider

anything tighter than 50mm or wider than 28mm is just too niche

Anywhere from 28-40mm (or equivalent) is pretty useful for capturing a scene, "as the human eye perceives it." Some people call this street photography or walkaround photography. I don't have a preference for exact focal length in that range (I own 18mm, 23mm, 24mm APS-C lenses and 35mm and 40mm FF lenses, and I seem to use them all equally), but 50mm is a bit tight for my preference for that sort of photography. I can use it well as a portrait lens, but I find it just a bit less versatile for capturing the wider scene.

Sometimes, a human eye perspective gets boring, though, especially for landscapes, where the immersion in such a beautiful area might make you forget to search for compositions. 70-200mm zooms are really useful. If I had to pick a range I use the most, I'd go with the lower end, maybe 100mm. Hard for me to decide on a prime in this range, though. I much prefer a zoom.

Above that, I use 400mm lenses for wildlife. Longer is better too, but after 500mm, it gets hard to find a moving animal in the viewfinder. I find that there is a distance at which wildlife will be scared away by the approach or presence of a human and anything under 400mm typically won't cut it. When the animal is quite close, I'd rather have the longer focal length to really fill the frame with the subject than have the ability to zoom out for an environmental portrait, so I can usually spend all day with a 300mm prime on APS-C or, if I am using a 100-400mm zoom, it will usually be zoomed all the way in.

For wide angle, I also prefer a zoom, unless a prime can offer some special close-focusing capabilities. I feel like this is more a result of my own taste and bias against ultra wide angle perspective distortion.

OP just give yourself more time to get used to the 35. I got a 35 f2 in an estate lot that I bought, played around with it for a while and struggled at first, but after a while, I got used to composing shots and it stays on my camera most of the time.

Use it more and see if it grows on you.

i currently use only a 28mm and a 85mm prime, i love the 28 for street and everyday photos, it´s really versatile but not good for photographing people. The 85 is perfect for portraits, makes it almost to easy, sometimes it´s quite good for formalistic images of random stuff, but these are never very interesting photos. For anything else i really hate the 85, it looks just really boring. i would love to have something in between the 28 and the 85, because switching between them is really weird when your eyes got used to one of these focal lenghts

Congratulations. I too have a good internet connection at home, and I have 20GB monthly data on my phone.
I also sometimes browse from internet cafes or in places with bad reception and I appreciate the rules put in place for resizing.

You wouldnt want every hasselblad-fag to post his 50mp xboxhueg photos either.

I wonder if the difference between shooting with 50 vs shooting with 40 would be significant enough to rationalize a purchase of a 40 When I already have a 50 and a 35. I guess it wouldn't make any sense?

I actually hate 35 mm. I seldom use it. I have one because there are the situations where it's called for but over all its meh.
What's really annoying is that Portland is OBESSED with 35 mm. They put it all over their bio they use it and they always tag it in their photos. Some also think it means film or that film style.

Here's one on 35 mm. film with a 20mm. f/2.8 Nikkor-D.
Pretty nice lens, by the way.

I like the 20 mm. on crop even better.
On the film cameras I mostly shoot either a Minolta 45/2 or a Nikkor 50/1.4D depending on the camera.

With a 20 mm? Touching distance of the two foreground characters.
I was using a quite cheap Nikon N80 for a body and the 20/2.8D is a sturdy lens, so there's not much risk of significant gear loss involved.

It started with me snapping this pic, which wouldn't even have been a keeper otherwise.
The guy got super mad, though, and decided to grab a hold of me and start screaming about how I was breaking the law (I wasn't).
He was using one of his arms to grab me and the other to hold that dog.
I was having one of my arms grabbed and had the N80 in the other.
So, neither of us had a hand free for punching and we just kinda stood there and argued while the bloke with the knit cap and his girlfriend showed up and tried to mediate. I told them to call the cops since I figured that physically detaining me for no reason must be a crime, but when they showed up they refused to charge the guy.
I would normally just laugh at something like this and enjoy having had the experience, but I noticed a few people I knew walk past and I really didn't need them thinking I was involved in some manner of drunken streetbrawl or whatever, so I was pretty annoyed that the cops just split us up and did nothing else.

He had a pretty firm grip on me and since I didn't have a strap on the camera I had no hands free.
The cops kept him longer than they kept me so I took a snap while walking away just to piss him off. It worked too.
