Before purchasing one of them you might want to learn more about both. Your question suggests that you don't know exactly what those applications are used for.
Lightroom offers a catalogue to store and organize all your pics and most important it offers good tools for processing RAW files. It has some more features but those could be easily ignored.
Photoshop can also develop RAW files but doesn't offer the organiser and catalogue features. So you could do the RAW processing in PS but the more interesting features are all the tools needed for deeper editing.

If you are a photographer and you don't one LR or PS I would suggest to start with LR. Or you go for the Adobe Photography Plan and get both for ~10-12 bucks (depending on your country) per month.

I wonder sometimes if people are unaware that Adobe Camera Raw (part of Photoshop) has batch processing, and it works with jpegs as well as raws. It's perhaps not as easy to use as Lightroom (which I've never used, ACR is quite convoluted in the way you add multiple files) and may lack some features but I suspect it can do most shit you'd need.

You pay because you want all the latest updates immediately instead of waiting for some Russian pirate to crack them and throw it up with a bitcoin malware included in your Pirate Bay torrent. Some of the updates are critical if you're using newer cameras and frankly, if you're blowing tons of cash on a camera/lenses/accessories, most are flush enough to pay $10 a month and not miss it.

I've only been into photography seriously since 2012 but I would hazard a guess that it has something to do with the cost of both. For the longest time, a LR license was like what, $120? And Photoshop was several hundred, or less if you were a student but never free. People probably just got used to using LR for everything from single shots to big batch edits and stuck with it. Personally I tried LR for a bit, but after using Photoshop I didn't want to go back. Fortunately around the time I started this hobby, they started the cloud thing and you could get LR + PS for $30/mo, then it dropped to $10. I don't remember the last time I opened Lightroom myself because I only edit a few photos at a time and I love stuff like selective color (adjustment layer) that you don't have in LR at all.

It's a trade off, most people doing large batches need to pull picks and slide a couple dials. Most amateurs need even less than that. PS is waaay better, just not for boring workhorse bullshit.

I bought Lightroom outright for £90. That was over two years ago. If I had paid £10 a month I would be up to over £240. I've had a few updates, most importantly the update to read 5D4 RAWs. I expect it to last me for many more years. Paying monthly for anything is a waste and for people who are uninteligent.

As for Lightroom VS Photoshop... What are you editing? One photo or several hundred? If it's the latter, use Lightroom.

Capture One costs 330 for a perpetual license.

Lightroom is 12/month here. Takes only a bit more than 2 years to break even. That's not cheaper.

On top of that, the Sony camera - only version of Capture One is just 88, and version upgrades also get a discount

Almost every reason anyone would ever actually want to upgrade is planned obsolescense. I use CS6 license I bought forever ago to this day and the only thing to ever hold me back is the new camera support.

new auto mode, revamped profiles, that's pretty much it. They did an extra bitch move and relese these two right after last classic was released, now last two updates were mainly fixing bugs they introduced with later ones. Oh, and some profile organization stuff just came with 7.4. Really nothing that's vital.
