When I starting to look at it (and ignorant of the technical effort) I wanted to do something more instinctual and less analytical but I ended up just turning into an autist doing algebra to calculate exposure from lux.
Plus it gets you the fuck outside. If you read math textbooks, for example, for a lengthy amount of time, even if you like it, you'll fucking lose your mind sometimes.

For the engineers it may be just disposable income and admiration of the machinery in cameras, old mechanical film bodies or modern digital.
