They grew out of being trips, or total amateurs who needed feedback and a place to dump photos for criticism, but they are still here. Posting single shots occasionally. Making short comments.
The problem with that is it doesnt inspire the next generation to make funny threads, or post aggressive criticism, or even become the new dickhead comedy trips. They cant get involved because theres no electricity. The /p/ community has been a perfect science experiment, born in the years when digital photography was reaching its zenith of quality - since then, the generation which followed basically grew up with photography at that level. Less of them started with film. More of them use camera phones. Photography is now accepted in the arts community, not just for candid shots, but as an artform. A photographer even won the turner prize, which was traditionally won by sculpture or painting. Editing photos is now much more accepted as normal than it was a decade ago. Straight out of camera is no longer given the respect it once was.
