Why even shoot 35mm over medium format?

What's the point of shooting 35mm anymore?
I can get better results with my 5D and don't have to worry about developing and scanning etc.
Is medium format the only truly useful film format? Easier to scan, and it actually has a tangible advantage (i.e potential for resolution and high detail) over digital FF in some aspects, if you're willing to go the extra mile.
What's the deal?

I find 135 easier to scan than 120, lots of old, very nice 135 specific scanners can be found dirt cheap online.

But yea, 135 isn’t any better than a five year old 16mp DSLR. Colors are nice though.

Fair point. I don't have much experience with DIY scanning so I just assumed larger = easier to preserve detail. Colours are nice indeed, but if they can just as well be emulated then even that's a shaky claim on advantage. Oh well, time to start saving up for a 67

Many benefits. Better portability than MF, better colors and rendering than digital, many more shots per roll than medium format. It doesn't cost very much for excellent lenses and bodies.

This is subjective obviously but I doubt a 5D digital file looks better than Ilford Pan F or Ektar 100 without a lot of effort in post.

You do have to edit the digital files though which I'd say is about a wash between the two.

I don't know that resolution is actually a huge benefit. For almost all intents and purposes 12MP is good enough. After about 20MP, There's essentially nothing you can't use it for.

As for the colors and “feel”, they can’t be emulated perfectly, but more than well enough. The thing is that film requires little to no post processing to get that look that could take hours docking with a raw. The film I shoot only needs minor exposure and white balance corrections.

Manual focus 135 camera are dirt cheap, especially the lenses, although being able to mount them on mirrorless cameras is driving up the prices again. Developing and scanning or printing can be done by a laboratory for reasonable prices, and for all intents and purposes 135 is capable enough in terms of resolution, as long as you don't push the film too much, while being more cost effective. 120 dedicated scanners are way more expensive than 135 ones to the point you might just get a good digital camera.

135 can be an economically sound choice if you don't shoot a lot (acquisition cost is diluted over time rather than highly concentrated), and you're highly interested in having a physical copy of your photos. In case of P&S a good 135 might (although I don't know for sure) outperform a digital one for a fraction of the cost. This can't be equally said for 120 film format.

MF has its niche applications, where you need a much higher resolution while keeping the film look, but there are many tradeoffs (basically what >>3313821 said) in it, which is why MF hasn't just wiped 35mm from the market.

cheap cameras, portable, can be fun to mess with different emulsions. still haven't seen many presets that have a similar look to a film

it's pretty good, but both 35mm and 120 only really shine when you print them with an enlarger or drum scan. 120 just looks better on a flatbed to a 35mm

Medium format is much more of a hassle really. I shoot a ton of 35mm which I bulk load, I can easily develop three rolls at once in my Paterson, I usually print 5x7’s or 18x24cm which 35mm has plenty enough resolution for. My style is snapshots and street, so the large amount of frames per roll fits me great. I also like how crunchy my results get when I push to 1600, whereas on MF I just get the contrast I like, but the grain just isn’t there. And speaking of printing, the community college darkroom I go to has all the enlargers set to 35mm always, and just has one carrier and lens for MF. And printing medium format on smaller paper just feels like a waste, especially something like 6x6 unless you crop.

I like medium format too but I definitely don’t take my 6x7 out unless I’m specifically out photographing. Whereas I -always- have at least a 35mm compact on me.

Kind of puzzled why some people seem so determined to get their knickers in a twist over this. Can't you just pick the medium that works for you and let other folks do likewise?

and why ektar? it's not the standard, nor the most used stock, most go for portra, fuji pro, and whatever consumer cheapies like ultra max or superia

Truthfully though, the only objective reason for 35mm film over FF digital is black and white photography. Try as they might, digital cameras still can't beat film for black and white image quality.

I'd argue medium format still wins for b&w but I don't have the space for an enlarger and trays and couldn't shoot enough to make it cost effective if I tried. Also dragging a brick up a mountain fucking sucks. Still, huge portaits are too noice to make up the difference.

This. Planned portraits first, and landscapes second are really suited for medium format.

35mm is really nice for portability and speed though, or if you want a more gritty look.

An f/1.4 lens and 1/60 shutter for 35mm compared to f/2.8 lens and 1/125 for medium format, it's a whole 3 stops faster. This is the difference between a usable indoors shot at night and a blurry underexposed mess.

Y'know, I really like the 35mm grit and contrast when using an enlarger. 8x10s stopped cutting it when I got into painting, but everything up to 20x is still pretty sexy. I don't fuck with color because I'm a control freak and the results don't impress much, but 35 is good for something.

Nowadays I only shoot 35mm to force myself to slow down. I picked up a 1930's Wirgin Edinex with a 50mm f2.9 lens for like $40. It slows me wayyyyy down cause its front focus with a separate viewfinder. I shot a test roll but for the life of me I can't find the scans.

The way I see it, if you are enjoying shooting and being "artistically" fulfilled then it doesn't matter what you shoot, unless you are working as a photographer.
Lastly, I also like how some of the film stocks come out with their special characteristics (like the outrun/cyberpunk feel of cinestill, or nostalgia feel of ultramax or Fuji superia)

Yeah 35mm B&W is so nice. I shoot almost entirely 120 nowadays but I still revisit 135 for dat BW because it is so much nicer. 120 is just too clean. If you’re not going to shoot BW for super grainy, slightly out-of-focus snapshits why are you shooting it at all?
