Really, unless you need close focusing accuracy due to what you shoot...the XA2's lens is noticeably sharper.

I don't shoot portraits or close-up work. Mostly street and landscapes. I'd pick an XA2 over an XA any day.

The XA has an f2.8 lens and it's an aperture priority camera: what if you step down to f3.5? Shouldn't it achieve the same sharpness of the XA2? Beside, it's a rangefinder: that's one of its attractive features.

A lens at 3.5 will be sharper than the same lens at 2.8, yes
But these are different lenses, with different properties, on different cameras. They can't be equated like that

I honestly thought the XA2 was just an updated version of the XA, aimed to increase ease of use and simplify production. That little camera is really interesting: do you by any chance have any link regarding the history, development, and technical details of the XA series?

If I intend to cross process some random, room temp stored slide film I've received from here and there, should I apply the same "+1 stop of overexposure per decade" rule of thumb when processing as negatives? It's always worked well for me with negative film, but I've always exposed slide at box speed and hoped for the best when shooting old stuff.

These are just random one off rolls though (excluding 5 rolls of 35mm Ektachrome 160T) and since getting slide developed where I live is increasingly difficult, I'm just going to get them C41'd I think. If I mail E6 out to get processed, I'd rather it at least be properly freezer stored so I know what to expect.

Also, I'm sure it's totally possible to get actually decent results with cross processing, any tips for that?

As an owner of an XA, the lens on it is definitely the weakest point. It's really soft until about f11. Sure, it's fun sized but it being a rangefinder makes it clumsy to use, and the image quality honestly isn't great.

I mean I'm glad I got mine for around €20 and I shoot with it all the time, but if I didn't have one I'd rather get 3 Mju I's instead than pay the current price of an XA.

The lenses aren't the same. I usually shot my XAs in the region of F8-F16 and my XA2s gave consistently shaper results at whatever apertures the camera happened to choose (probably also in the F8-F11 range).

The XA's rangefinder focusing is attractive, but like I said if your shooting style doesn't have you shooting at larger apertures and close focusing distances, the use of an RF is kind of moot.

With the XA2 using 400 speed film I'd keep the focus parked on the 'far' setting and in daylight conditions my DoF would be from ~2m to infinity. In lower light I'd use the 'far' setting to get a DoF from ~4m to infinity and the 'middle' setting to get ~1.5m to 4m in focus. The 'close' setting was a crapshoot and I simply stopped trying to use it.

I wished they'd pushed the aperture size a bit with those 110 cameras. With a film frame this small it should be fairly easy to make a <f/1 lens that wouldn't be too costly or big (like a 135 50mm prime at most).

I guess they'd have been too soft to be useful.

i thought the 2.8 manual focus aperture priority rangefinder talk was appealing but after getting one i realize this thing is entirely clumsy, especially since mine has a bag insensitive shutter button im stuck there fiddling for a bit until i get something

I thought about it for a minute and I've concluded that what's attracting to me on the XA is the fact that it's the smallest rangefinder, and has aperture priority AE. However I've looked online and found reviews saying the XA is a pain in the ass to use if you have to wear eyeglasses, and as anon said the novelty wears off pretty quickly. I've also thought that if I want to take soft snapshots from a fixed lens portable camera I can always use my smartphone and spare me the expense of developing a roll.
The XA2 has the same great design, but it gives up on the initial gimmicks to gain in sharpness, and if sharpness is a concern (which it is: film costs too much to be wasted in fuzzy photos) I'd be better off using my A-1, where I can lose sharpness thanks to my incompetence rather than the camera's bad performance.

i use a xa2 pretty much exclusively, the zone focusing means that it can go from being in my trouser pocket to shooting something within about 1.5s. the portability cannot be understated, you can take it around at all times without thinking about it to take sharp photos, and really quickly. hikes - lightweight and decent landscapes, street - very fast so you can be stealthy if you want.

the downside is you're giving up creative control. you can under/overexpose to an extent by manipulating the ASA but you don't control aperture. in low light it will always be wide (and less sharp).
other downsides - sometimes I find it hard to judge distance between the closest and middle distance.
the plus of using this camera is the ability to forget nearly everything but composition/framing. that's all i have to think about and I think it helps.

Not at all, it was informative, but we clearly seek different things out of our cameras: while being able to go from holstered to shot as fast as spaghetti western hero might be useful in quite some situations, I value more a higher degree of control (even if I don't know what I'm doing) at the expense of shooting speed, since I enjoy fiddling with the settings, and because I also regard film as a way to get more involved with the shooting process and its mechanics. While I do enjoy some level of automation (full PASM is the feature that made me get an A-1), the zone focusing of the XA2 takes too much away from the experience. Also, I'm shit at evaluating distances on my own.

I might get the XA if I manage to find one for less than dirt cheap and shoot a roll for the sake of it, but I surely won't shell out the average asking price on ebay.

I didn't mention - this is for medium format. For 35mm, I agree the 8100 is a great value.

Yes, the Plustek models will be the best dedicated scanners under $300 (or under $1000 really). Good resolution but very slow.

If speed is an issue then maybe DSLR scanning could be a possibility? Once you get quick at it you can run through rolls very efficiently

I occasionally have access to a Pakon F135+. It can scan a whole uncut roll of 35mm in about 4-5 minutes at high resolution. It also colour corrects flawlessly. They go for quite a bit these days but are undoubtedly the fastest 35mm scanner

I just got in to film and shoot mostly street, I've only got a 50mm f1.8 right now but looking to go something wider like 35mm f2.

I use Plustek 8200 ai.

Using triple pass (multiple exposure and dust removal) at 3200 dpi it takes about 5 minutes a shot. Not too much trouble when I am doing 2 or 3 rolls at a time, but it adds up quick. I have gotten into the habit of dropping off rolls as soon as I finish them to avoid a backlog. Does a pretty good job of flipping negative, though the white balance can be off at times.

I tried DSLR scanning for the longest, and while it is true it is quicker per shot, I ended up taking more time getting it all set up and then removing dust by hand and fixing colors. All that is instant with the plustek.

Fuji hasn't downscaled production to fit demand either, from what I've read. They just killed it.

Also, another company offered to buy the technology and machines used to produce the FP100b/c etc and Fuji declined. It kills me, I have literally one more sitting in my RB67 Polaroid backing and know it's my last. Instax and the new Polaroids have nothing on FP or the original polas.

1. Analyze the photos and decide why they're shit. SOMETHING made you take the photo. What was it and why did you fail to capture it in a way that makes for a good photo? Critique yourself and review your shit.

2. Decide the rolls are shit, look through the scans once, and never look at them again. Repeat for eternity.

That scanner pumps out 6mp files...you don't need to be shooting Velvia to exceed it's resolution capabilities.

Kind of a dumb question, I was playing around with my canon a1 and felt like I only half advanced the lever but accidentally took a shot.
Then when I advanced the lever again it fully advanced. Could that half advance have made my film get stuck halfway from advancing fully, so now each full advance on the lever puts the next shot in the middle of two negatives?

don't worry about it, the frame lines are created by the camera advancing the film uniformly, there are no dividing lines between frames on the film itself. you might just have your last shot on the roll get cut off on one side. no biggie.

New to film (and photography in general) I was shooting some Ektar 100 in the city the other day then it started to get really overcast and sun started to set.

And yes you'll need to think more carefully about what situations you want to shoot in. Portra 400 is excellent as it can be overexposed and underexposed and still produce amazing results. Many people shoot it at 100 and develop normally for more pastel colours and reduced contrast, and it can just as easily be shot at 800 and dev'd normally with almost no noticeable effects.

Find the optimal height of the film above the scanner glass. Scanners have a zone of focus just like a camera, and the default film holders can sometimes be too high or too low.

There really is a pretty set in stone limit for how much detail you'll get out of a flatbed, especially if you're shooting 35mm. If you're just shooting 35 it'd make sense to get rid of the flatbed and get a Plustek, they're excellent in terms of image quality and you don't need to worry about focus with them

I live in the middle of nowhere with no labs around, the c41 dev kit is also kind of expensive to ship here.
I'm thinking of getting a plustek scanner and just sending rolls away to get developed then scan at home and get prints of the ones that turn out well.

Plustek is the way to go, try and get a used one if you can. They tend to run ~200-250 ozbux on the Australian Film Photographers fb page.

C41 dev is very easy to do yourself. Give someone like Rewind or Racquet a call and see if you can buy chemicals through them, as you'll likely be able to dodge import charges and whatever else you have to pay on top of the RRP

I would not overexpose if I were you, slide doesn't tend to lose sensitivity like negative film. Cross process is very unpredictable, and varies from emulsion to emulsion what sort of results you'll get. From a development perspective I've seen the best result from customer rolls when the film is developed slightly longer. Anyway it's pretty much luck of the draw, it could turn out like complete ass and you lose all your shadow detail and it goes ultra grainy, or it could come out pretty okay.

If at all possible I would process as E-6. There's some pretty economical ways to process it depending on where you're located

Yes, I exclusively shoot 400 speed film pushed to 1600. In sunny 16 all my shots will be @ f/16, 1/2000th which is the max my camera can go, transitioning into shade/indoors I can easily have my aperture down to around f/8 (or even lower for indoors) and my shutter around 1/500th (even down 1/125th of a second indoors).

I think I’ll use this one roll of 160T I have loaded to experiment, shooting it at 100 and 160 to see how it behaves. The rest are just one off rolls so I have no chance of bracketing or anything, so I’m pretty certain I’ll just go Lomo on them.

I’ve shot some slide that wasn’t stored properly and got a roll processed as E6, and the results are so grainy and color shifted I’m thinking I’d rather get the rest (2 unexposed rolls + 2 roll I’ve already shot at box speed) crossed so at least they’d maybe be interesting/fun.

I buy my C41 kits from decisivemoment and get 15-20 rolls out of each one. So doing the math it's about $4 a roll. To stretch the chemicals you'll need to increase times as the chemicals become used and exhausted but apart from that it's easy. The chems last a good while, longer than the instructions say by quite a bit

Yeah I get a good 10 or so piled up and then just spend an afternoon developing them, and then after that I just dev rolls whenever I finish them.

I do my developing in the bath tub. I put the paterson tank and the chemical containers in a plastic tub, get the bathwater up to temperature and then fill the tub. I let the chemicals come up to temperature and then start the dev. The developer is the most temperature critical step and needs to be within 2-3 degrees of 38 celcius. This is only a 3 min 30 second step, and then after that each step becomes more and more lenient to temperature. Get some music going or something as it can get a bit boring, C41 has a few more steps than B&W.

It is possible to develop C41 at a similar temperature to B&W, but prolongs the dev bath from 3.5 minutes to 20 minutes.

Apart from the temperature thing it's much easier than B&W since all film is the same time and temperature. Start to finish including spooling film and getting chems up to temp it'll probably take you 30 minutes or so

You reuse the chems instead of throwing them out, so it's a matter of exhausting the chemicals rather than running out of them. I've never had chemicals expire on me since I always use them until they're done, but I've had mixed chemicals for up to 3 months and they've been fine. Beyond that I can't say, as I usually exhaust the chemicals long before then

I got it for free from someone who passed away (i didnt know them), i dont think they ever used it.
The autofocus is nice, I know it has options for remote switch and some other neat stuff but in terms of handheld images it comes out okay.

One little glitch with the rollers, the top center of the image sometimes doesnt get developed. I tried both the IP bw and color films last summer. BW looks great. color has a shifted lomography feel to it. cool if you want that, but the colors arent very naturual.

I shoot less than a roll a month on average, devving myself is not economically sound, especially because then I'd have to get a scanner. For now what I do is going to a photographer's shop near my house, who he's also one of the front-ends of a lab that devs film and prints photos and drop the rolls; he then sends them up, the film is then developed (probably in bulk, provably a certain day of the week), printed, and everything is shipped back. Last time I got two 36 exposures 200 ISO rolls developed and printed, bought another two rolls of 36 exposures of colorplus 200, and paid 30€ for everything: dev+prints should have been like 24€ for 72 photos, meaning it costs 30 cent per photo (42 cents per photo if you count the cost of the film). Honestly it's a good deal, 30 bucks every two months is not a massive expense, while if I had to do it myself I'd have to spend around 50€ for the equipment, 30€ for the chemicals, and 220€ for a plustek: that's 300€ upfront, and then I'd be left with the negatives and digital pictures; for that amount and to end up with a folder full of jpg I'd just get a good used DSLR and call it a day.

Can get epson 2580 PHOTO for 20 euros. Don't have a scanner, so i have to suffice with shitty minilab scans (300dpi). Is it worth it? Also scanning makes up the most of the film dev cost (4 euros for scan, 1 for c41 dev)

Seems like if you'll do 5 rolls it'll pay for itself. Plus, the scans are TIFF you can process usefully in Darktable. Go for it if it's in good condition and comes with the film holders it's supposed to have.

Prepare to clean the dust off though. Easier to do with a rag than in post.

Don't get a press kit, i.e. one with blix and mixed from powders. That's for people who don't have a big old sous-vide but instead use a bucket of hot water; that's gotta have the fast treatment. Get one of the four-bath liquid kits instead. Much nicer to prepare and probably better quality for what you can do with your Jobo as well.

Wish I had room for one. Sheeit. Not that I'll take up colour anytime soon.

How can I get better at focusing wide open? My screen has a split prism w/ microprism collar but I still manage to miss focus when doing portraits.

Only about 1 out of 5 shots are perfectly in focus when I shoot at f1.7.

Should I just practice more and git gud?

Some price of equipment you have been itching for or hunting for?

For me it is the Minolta Alpha 9 Ti w/ the SSM upgrade. Only 1000 were made, and very few got the upgrade. Many of those that did were used pretty hard because it was one of the best and toughest a-mount film bodies.

Don't shoot portraits wide open. Even at f/2 that's fuck-all for depth-of-field, so you'll get 1/5 satisfactory results. Go to f/4 and move the background further out.

Also, the sharp bit isn't equally in front and behind where you've focused; inspect the dof scale on your lens for what the manufacturer's view on that was. Also also, don't move your camera forward or backward after focusing.

Surprisingly small for a processor that can do 6 120 rolls. One on craigslist for a grand was a godsend after I the lab messed up my color rolls yet again. I am always surprised at just how dusty film can get whenever I get it back from a lab

idk if i posted these already, but shot some very expired kodak gold 1000 (yes 1000) in my Yashica-Mat with a 3D printed adapter. Results were interesting, lots of frame spacing issues since the yashica measures how much backing paper is on the take up spool to adjust frame spacing.

I personally usually recommend people get a cheap point and shoot camera as a first film camera, there are quite a few costs associated with film photography (developing/film costs) and if I'm honest a lot of people get put off by that after a few months.

If you go to any thrift shop there'll be a film p&s dirt cheap. Get one of those, shoot a few rolls, see if the costs bother you or not. Then invest in a "real" camera.

CLE really isn’t all that much more expensive than the CL. I love my CLE, but I am hesitant to use it all that much since it is the most expensive film camera I own. Tempted to get a CL, but everything on e-bay is in shit condition or overpriced.

And that is more of a rangefinder issue than anything.

If I could find a good looking CL for $300 I’d grab it.

CLE is much more modernized. It was the best m-mount body until the M7 was released 20 years later.

Happens all the time on yahoo auctions.

I don't know why some of those idiots don't put a reserve up. I watched one thing get relisted 3 or 4 times. They always cancel the auction at the last minute so they don't take a hit for refunding.

This is the first time I've ever had an item on yahoo auctions get relisted on me and I've won some bloody cheap shit on there without the seller doing this (best I won was around 15ish rolls of 35mm colour neg/slide film for 1yen). I see a lot of valuable/popular items have reserves on them, even the more expensive Canon LTM lenses.
The original listing was an auction starting price of 100yen and a buyout price was around 6780yen ($80ish). Eh kinda sucks but oh well I need a cheap LTM lens to test a Canon P I won on there a few weeks back.
But hey at least I won a 10 pack of Superia Premium 400 for the same price I'd pay for 3 rolls where I live.

To rank better when people list for price from low to high, to attract more people thanks to the lower starting price, to give you the choice to sell the object or not to the highest bidder if the auction didn't reach the reserve price. It's a quite handy tool.

Can you fuck up fixing?

I dev very rarely and usually just put a splash of fresh fixer in my bottle of old fixer and leave the film in there for 5-6 minutes. Don't really watch the dilution ratio or anything.
Do I risk ruining my film with this, instead of checking every time whether the old fixer is still good and making a new batch if it's not?
Is it possible to over-fix?

For the CLE? From what I read, everything but the circuit board is easily replaced. The board has to be taken from donor cameras.

Not for the quality (supposedly sharper wide open than a VC nokton classic f/1.4 at f/2, and none of the gritty HP5-in-the-lens aesthetic) but for the fact that zomg, 35mm Sonnar for the cost of like a screwmount Summitar with the coatings rubbed off.

Different stocks have different colour balance.

With slides it's really easy to tell if the scan is accurate, just hold the slide next to the scan and see if it looks close.

From the 2 photos you posted, the slide one looks better exposed and more pleasing in white balance, if a bit warm.

So my plans today was to develop 5 rolls of B&W film I had laying around. So I started by getting the film leads out of them with pic related, first 3 went fine no big deal, 4th one was kinda annoying to get out but I managed and the last roll was a roll of Rollei Retro 400s. So I put the film retriever in and pulled it out and the fucking thing got caught on the film and pulled half the roll out! Every single time I've used it it's only pull about 2 to 5cm. Spooked the shit out of me.

You put the retriever in and pull it out it's just as easy and also you doing the can opener way. With the can opener way there's a higher chance of scratching the film and you can't reuse the canister for bulk rolling.

No, I don't have a film scanner, and the lab I rely upon does only dev+print, although I don't actually know if the lab scans the film and prints the files, or prints it the old fashioned way, so I'm stuck with those results; I hate not being able to fix those photos that are close to being decent like with digital (basically cropping and adjusting brightness), but at the same time it's part of the game, and in a sense it's what makes them authentic. To be clear it's not that bad of a deal, first because I'm actually interested in the prints, and secondly because everything ends up costing something like 0,35€/print. In the end I'm happy with some of the portraits and snapshots of my family. I'll try scanning with my flatbed some prints, hoping the glossy finish doesn't mess with the scan. I'll report back.

Not him, but I actually like it. And I think the tree does add to the composition in this case. It sets up an interesting framing, and a third layer: woods/agrarian/industrial.

Rollei Retro (and many films from Rollei and Adox) are coated on very thin, clear polyester base, unlike every other general photography film basically. Maybe this could have something to do with how much the retriever grabbed and pulled out.

dev'd with overused c-41 dev and halfway fucked the negatives lol
why can't they produce more like
2 dia, 3-5 CN and maybe 1 SW

Guys, I've had a bad light leak issue on my latest roll. Other leaks have happened before but were in a much smaller magnitude.

Camera is a [mju:]-2, have you guys ever seen something like this?

What should I do?? I've "inspected" it and did not notice any abnormalities on the camera

I've had strange light leaks with this camera before too
It turned out that when the lens would extend to focus it would let light in around the base of the lens

To test for this open the back up and take some photos, check if light is getting in from anywhere but the lens
