What options for a waterproof camera are better than a Fuji quicksnap waterproof?

MUST FIT THE FOLLOWING

>waterproof
>focal length between 28mm and 50mm (35mm equiv)
>can fit in a pocket
>shoots film (I would think film would look better than what ever tiny sensor is in a water proof digital)
>can be left in a hot car without it fucking up (or is disposable so it doesn't matter)

Would Prefer it fits the following

>selective aperture/aperture priority metering
>120 film
>focal length between 35mm and 40mm

Try to find some nikonos camera (nikonos-v comes to mind). They fit most of your criteria, except fitting in pocket. I think it has aperture priority.

I have a sea and sea motor marine 2, motor drive, fixed at 1/125, has flash, zone focusing,.can do macro, paid like 120 USD for it on eBay, came boxes and with a strobe(need to use that bad boy at some point...)
Looks like a toy, feels like a tank. Does not fit in a regular pocket, but fits in fannypacks/ top compartment of most rucksacks

OP's pic for snorkel and just dicking around in good sunlight

these cameras are old and are only as good as their weather seals. test and test thoroughly before even thinking about using it in the water.

NEVER leave the camera in a hot car. if you have to: icebrick + cooler bag. it'll keep it relatively cool

i did see a pentax 67 camera and marine case on ebay like 8 years ago.. it went for $3500 back then. i hate to think what it would go for now

picked this up off craigslist for $15 a couple months ago. Don't really know when I'll use it, the pacific is pretty dark and hazy. maybe use it during a rain storm or something a-la bad weather.

I think all in on mine I might have paid 100 bucks, has f/2 28mm, waterproof to 130ft, battery lasts forever, and unlike literally every camera mentioned in this thread if you let go of it underwater it floats to the surface.

IQ is excellent and I would argue better than most of the digital point and shoots mentioned, at 100 ISO it is near DSLR quality and it will shit on current underwater cams that cost much more (Lolympus TG-860 I'm looking at you) even at 800 ISO it looks better than my 5D did.

They can be had pretty damn cheap and the S90 is the first with the multi-function ring in the series which allows you to change the aperture with a knob on the housing.

The only downside is it will not fit in your pocket, but you can put a strap on it and carry it like a dSLR

And for the record, this was shot on an S50 which is a previous model and inferior in many ways to the S90, but was also in a Canon housing and can be found dirt fucking cheap.

S50 isn't bad but you can't turn it off once in the housing so unless you have new batteries for it you can forget using it more than a half hour at a time.

Fucking awesome, I've sprayed and prayed in the Florida Springs because the water is like 60 degrees, my old Olympus had a flippy screen which was cool but the IQ was absolutely dreadful not even cell phone quality.

You do not really want the things you have listed as wants.

Waterproof, obviously, yes. That dictates some changes to the rest of your list.

Nope. You want a focal length between 20 and 35mm-equivalent. Water has a different refractive index than air, which means that when the light going through water hits your lens, it's gonna be bent differently than when light going through air hits your lens. Result: Everything's a little bit more zoomed in. Pick a slightly wider focal length than you're used to.

This is a huge limiting factor. Any decent underwater camera is not going to be pocketable. This immediately eliminates any camera designed for land shooting in a case, and eliminates higher-end underwater cameras like the Nikonos. So insisting on pocketability limits you to either the Fuji Quicksnap you mentioned. There are a few underwater point & shoot film cameras, but even they're too bulky for a normal pocket.

From my experience shooting underwater, it's very hit-or-miss. There's a lot of trial and error. If you're shooting film, you have 36 frames to get it right, then you have to
1. Get out of the water
2. Dry off the camera
3. Swap film
4. Try again
And all without even knowing whether or not you got the shot. Granted, I shoot people underwater, so if you're shooting something more static it might not be that bad, but still.

HAHAHAH. Yeah, no. It's hard enough trying to find a medium format camera that's pocketable, much less one for underwater shooting that's pocketable.

In any case, the main limiting factor on your image quality is likely to be the clarity of the water rather than format size. Even "clear" water in a pool isn't that clear if you're more than a few feet away.

So here's what I'd recommend:

Get a cheap mirrorless and a hard case for it. Hard cases for those small cameras can be had for surprisingly cheap (~100-200 USD), although be sure to test it for leaks every time before you actually dunk the camera.

It meets your requirements for underwater, focal length (with appropriate lens), possibly pocketability (without the case, and depending on your pocket size and lens), decent image quality (which is what you actually wanted when you asked for film), and can probably survive a hot car if you stick it in the glove box where it's not straight up baking in the sun.

Also, if you want to shoot underwater, make sure you have goggles; even if you remember opening your eyes underwater as a kid, you can't properly compose that way.

You're going to have a bad time.

Film is cool, but it's often darker underwater than you'd think. I like my Ricoh WG-50. It's small and pretty rugged. The state of Massachusetts uses them (actually the wg-30, which is slightly cheaper) in auto repair shops to gather inspection data. That's a pretty harsh environment for a camera. I haven't taken mine swimming yet, but I'd feel confident doing so.

It also has a built-in macro light that you can keep on during a video, making it a great blowjob camera.
