It was superseded by the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM and then by the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM, which each had incremental improvements to the optical design and added IS. And neither of those lenses is even that sharp wide open.
I have tested the EF-S 55-250mm IS II next to the original EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, and even the cropped image from the 55-250 lens was sharper at 250mm than the 70-300 was at 300mm. It is my understanding that the I, II and STM versions of the 55-250 are all pretty similar in terms of sharpness, and there may be copy variation in all these lenses, but you can get a 55-250 for well under $100, lightly used on ebay. The simple fact that it has IS should be enough to prefer it over the 75-300.
