How do you come up with a photography project? I'm going to be leaving to travel the world indefinitely in October but want to have a plan going in. I feel like doing a Humans of New York type thing would be derivative as fuck.

Just focus on taking great photos. You don't have to have an idea for a theme or project beforehand.

Pick a theme.

Could be as specific as a particular thing like taxis or stairs, or it could be as broad as 'danger' or 'love'.

Could also work on composition basics like line, shape etc

If you are going to travel the world you're going to spent much time, effort money etc. so you rather should focus (if you want to invest in a photography project in a wise manner) on philosophical questions such as "What is the relation of the people to his environment?" or "How do cultures differ from x other culture?" or "Are relationships between men and woman, parents and children valued differently in x culture?" instead of photographing particular objects.

There's countless possibilities to turn a travel around the world in an enormously good photographic project which adds (or could add) a piece to our society.

Isn't that what the original dude you replied to tried to say?

Particular objects, such as taxis their drivers could be a good theme. Even though the theme itself seems to be just an object, with some photo skills you can frame and express the object differently, preferably matching the culture of each area. Or not, if you want to show the mundane taxis as something permanent across cultures.

A certain object as a starting point for a theme is simple and gives you something to work with. You don't have to spend a ton of time chasing it either, you can just focus on all kinds of other subjects and whenever a taxi happens to pass you get a photo of that. It's not very time-consuming to focus on something mundane, so you can capture multiple themes during the same trip.

Regardless of what you choose to do, spend the first day taking pictures of whatever captures your attention to get the touristy snapshitter out of you so you can focus in on a specific theme/getting quality photographs. Get a feel of the place you’re photographing and get comfortable before locking in, otherwise you’ll be taking snapshits the whole time.
