I don’t have any recent purchases because when I make purchases I usually regret them and use them less than wanted. Sometimes they pan out, I got some nice usage of my GW690 on vacation and learned to like it a lot. Before that I thought of selling it back at least twice. I now have some beautiful 120 velvia memories.
Now I’ve decided to always give myself a month before purchasing anything new, and if I change my mind for something else, reset the clock. Even if there’s a good deal on eBay. Saving 20% now isn’t worth it if I’m wasting 100% of that on something I don’t need.
By doing this I’ve avoided a Canon 50mm 1.2 ltm which in retrospect looks like a meme lens for lomo shooters or portraits only (and its giant for a rangefinder lens). In fact I no longer see the point of a 50mm below f/2 because they get so large and an 85mm f/1.4 beats any 50 for le cweamy Bokay. And who shoots at f/1.2 or below anyways? It’s soft in a bad way and looks like shit.
I’ve also avoided a 35mm cinememe when I haven’t even put together a good script yet and own a 24/55/85 combo already; tripods; miscellanious fixed lens film rangefinders; resisted Fuji digital rangefinder temptations (but may genuinely consider in future); some 100mm lenses for rangefinder.
The only things I’ve been wanting for more than a month now are a Leica M3 and a new Zeiss Sonnar 50mm 1.5. I’ve decided that if I meet some personal goals for the year, I’ll buy it for my birthday in 6 months.
I’ve saved a lot of money with this method. I bet if they check my internet history at work they’re going to wonder why I visit blogs about Leica M cameras so much. Gotta motivate myself through this shit job sometimes.
>>3326367Speaking of Leica and Zeiss lenses, not a big fan of post-M5 Leicas but that 35 biogon I hear is a genuinely fantastic lens. Got any sample pics wide open you’ve taken?
