Who /hype/ here for the Fuji XF10? Cheaper successor to the Fuji X70, $500 for a 24mp Bayer APS-C sensor and touch screen navigation with 1:1 ratio and Fuji film simulations at a swipe. No tilting screen, viewfinder or hot shoe though sadly. It also has the Ricoh GR snap focus feature (thank fuck). Out in August.

Yeah, it's odd seeing Fuji ditch X-Trans and make all these poorfag Bayer based cameras lately. I wonder how it'll work out for them long term. I wouldn't be surprised if they rush out some "entry level" lenses too with cheaper build quality.

GRII is still sold here for ~750€ new, which is way too much, and I haven't seen used ones here in years. I'm currently looking at a used nikon A for 300€ (and a sony rx1r for1100€) so, this fuji seems a pretty good deal.

X-Trans apparently needs moar processing power which would need a newer processor, that would make the camera larger and warmer, more expensive, eating more battery power, so they had to compromise here with the regular bayer sensor.

The Coolpix A is genuinely a fantastic camera. I have a coworker who had one on loan from Nikon when it was released. The images I've seen from the brief week he had it are genuinely impressive for a P&S. With the release of newer features in the XF10 I'd probably opt for that instead though. The convenience of the joystick and touchscreen cannot be understated imho

I test-drove an X-T1 for a few months, but eventually sold it. I liked everything about the camera aside from the output.

To my eye, the images out of the camera just never looked that good at the pixel level, and I attribute that entirely to the X-trans type sensor. Sometimes, the conditions would be just right and I'd only get sharpness on the thing I wanted to be sharp, which would be RAZOR SHARP, but other times, due more to the colors and textures inherent to the scene than the photographer's technique, things just didn't look sharp at all and there were distracting artifacts in the image that just made it look like trash at full resolution. Downscaled, the images looked fine, but I shouldn't have to downscale images to be free of sensor artifacts. Images I've seen taken with the X-T2 look worse at the pixel level, albeit better when downscaled.

Like I said, I really loved everything else about the camera. The lens ecosystem is maturing nicely and I didn't totally mind the lack of telephoto lenses because the short focal length lenses were so good. If they can release a camera with X-T or X-H type controls, but with a Nikon D7200 type sensor, then I would go "all in."

I was just about to get a Ricoh GR 2 until I saw this thread. I am wondering if the zone focus / snap focus mode will be quickly accessible and adjustable by a wheel or if it will be a useless piece of shit menu clicking function. If the solution is as good, the AF is quick and the sensor+lens combination is comparable with the Ricoh I will get this one instead.

It will probably come down to the viewfinder and size. I personally prefer using the LCD over any viewfinder, I just compose way better with a LCD which is why I don't care too much about the higher X series. The X100 cameras are also too big for me to carry in my pant pockets without caring. There is also a difference in focal length (28mm vs 35mm).

Pretty sure it's not? You can shoot in any regular mode with the Ricoh but just decide to full press (not half pressing) and it will take the photo at the snap focus distance. The Fuji will take the photo at F5.6 at 5m which means that it is a seperate snap focus mode or it overrides the mode you are in. I hope you are right though.

Just read the comments on the rumor sites/forums. People seem so pissed about it and call it a toy. I personally think it's the best camera news I have heard in years. My only problem with it is the lens hood, but I hope it becomes an even better camera than the Ricoh GR. It has to be really good though, because the button layout of the Ricoh is still king and a touch display isn't that great on a simple camera like that. Guess I'll have to wait for reviews to decide which one I am getting.

Don't forget the Ricoh GR III is most likely coming in September now Ricoh are launching teaser Facebook pages and Japanese ads for it. I'd wait and see how Ricoh react first. It wouldn't surprise me if Fuji rushed this out to compete with whatever the GR III happens to be.

This is the best looking design Fuji have made for some reason. Has a minimalist Hexar AF or Sigma DP look to it, much better than Fuji jank like the X-Pro2 ISO ring. Joystick is a huge plus.

My major gripe with my fuji setup is that the raws are horrific to work with. Having a standard Bayer sensor should make them easier to work with right?

What the actual fuck. So they took an X70, which actually had features that made it unique and different from a GR II (while being in the same category), and made it a shittier version of the GR II.

The X70 sold so badly they immediately discontinued it so I guess they've taken the idea and watered it down for normies. All the marketing is aimed at Instagram Staceys. If people actually bought the X70 I'm sure they'd make a direct successor to it rather than a cut back version.

X-trans is trash, and configurable dials are better.

I agree with the rest of your complaints though. Especially the hot shoe one, that is inexcusable.

Mode dial is a huge waste of space. Only like 3 of those options are useful at all and it takes up an entire dial which could have a more useful dedicated function.

Plus, it's so much more intuitive to think about each parameter and set if you want a specific value or auto, than it is to figure out what the letter the specific permutation of auto + manual settings you want maps to.

Grew up shooting film, still shoot film.

My cameras either have a PSAM dual or combo PA&shutter speed dial.

One of the things I dislike fuji’s digital bodies because their dials are in the “wrong place” compared to what I usually shoot. Sure you can switch it in software, but then you have useless labels.

I don't think it was the X70's fault. There just isn't that much of a market, I'm pretty sure XF10 will also have dismal numbers because those Instagram Staceys are all using using their phones. And if they decided to get a "real" camera, they'd go straight for a rabel or any other entry level DSLR. This category of camera is for street enthusiasts, really. PASM with scene modes and no user modes isn't gonna make it attractive.

Am I the only person who prefers LCD over any viewfinder? I still shoot film and have for many years, so I am used to cameras with big and bright viewfinders, but I find composing an image so much easier and fun with an LCD screen. It is like a preview of the photograph you are getting and LCDs have gotten so fucking good over the last years.

Bigheadfaggot did a first impressions of the XF10, it's much more compact and pocketable than the Ricoh GR (lens doesn't protrude at all when turned on compared to the GR). I guess this is where the compromises where made.

No it isn't, he comes to the conclusion it's more compact... with the lens cap off, and the lens doesn't stick out as much as the GR when the camera is turned on. I own the GR and the lens does stick out more than most people think. The X70 is the one that wasn't that compact at all.

Well the Ricoh carrying pouch was made specifically to fit the Ricoh. I'm sure a pouch designed around the dimensions of the Fuji would only be a hair bigger. Third parties will make a slimmer lens cap for the XF10 I'm sure, it's the only thing holding it back.

The size difference is negligible, however when powered on, the lens protrudes much less on the XF10 vs GRI/II. This doesn't matter in the pocket, but makes it faster getting ready.

The speed difference is more negligible than is the size difference. Actually, it's not the size that's a negative on the XF10, it's the shape. It's not a smooth surface when powered off. It's has protrusions sticking out. That's much worse for any pocketability considerations and getting a quick draw from your pocket.

At least Fuji cameras don't draw dust onto the sensor like the GR making putting it in your pocket dangerous to the camera. If the lens sticking out a bit means they've stopped the dust problem then it's an improvement.

Yeah, this is GR's greatest downfall. Everything else is perfect, but this is a biggie. I don't know if there's any room for it, but my preferred solution would be to make the camera weather sealed, and then have a bladder (inside the camera, but outside the sealed system) that inflates when the lens pulls in, and deflates when the lens pushes out. This way it doesn't have to pull air in from the outside.

It's not so much because of the lens design, but because of poor sealing. Someone took it apart and managed to seal it properly. He said it's just badly sealed by Ricoh, so there is hope that they fix it with the next version.

It's just a fuckup. I've five year old sony poit-n-shoot, round ten year old cheapas canon point-n-shoot that went through who knows what before it ended with me. Both have zero sensor spots. Any fixed lens camera should be, and usually is, dust proof. It's not rocket science.

I doubt it's significantly worse image quality. The 1/1.7" sensor on my Q is absolutely amazing. My APS-C is obviously better, but not that much, and when resized to less than half the original size, you can't even tell the difference anymore. I seriously doubt a 1" sensor is worse than that.

If you can't tell the difference in image quality, then obviously it doesn't matter to you. I had the RX100III, and iq was just shit compared to larger sensor cameras (not to mention the ui/ux), I never used it so I sold it. I also have the LX100, and while it's much better, it still doesn't come close to my x-t2, and high ISO just isn't great. Modern apsc sensors are fucking amazing. Almost comparable to last generation full frame.

Downsampled to 8mp the RX100 and LX100 are very similar (the LX100 has a larger 4/3 sensor but a lower resolution) and both are with 1-1.5 stops of the best APS-C sensors when it comes to noise performance. Considering their age and size disadvantage I wouldn't call that significantly worse and both are very capable still to this day even for more "serious" photography.

A RAW won't have noise reduction applied, that's strictly for jpegs. You can always turn down noise reduction in camera if you don't want it in your jpgs but it doesn't impact their RAWS.

If noise reduction has been pre-applied to a raw for whatever reason you just turn it down in Lightroom or Capture One. The slider for it is right there. I don't get your problem here, the point of a RAW is you have total freedom with it. Fuji isn't any different, they just have some compatibility issues with Adobe that requires an extra conversion to DNG before editing.

It was a Fuji rep who told me this though.

He said that it applies to raws and even a setting of 0 was rather heavy and to change it to -2.

I call bullshit on this. Raws look radically different to processed jpegs, both on the diddly lcd and in a number of different programs I've tried in the endless search for a non-shitty fuji raw processing workflow. I even shoot with noise reduction at -2 as suggested by a blogger who's article frequently gets linked if you Google around this subject, but who is coincidentally certainly not a fuji rep... I use jpgs sooc for social media so it makes sense to have my settings dialed in accordingly.

Source: X-T2 as a daily driver. X-T10 before that, X-Pro1 before that...

Could be something to it. I notice processing delay on long exposures when noise reduction is on. If it's turned completely off, there's no delay. Didn't look too deeply into it, but easy test would be taking few raws, at each setting then comparing them. Differences should be most noticeable on longer exposures, higher iso.
On general, sharpness, contrast, vibrance and curve controls won't effect raws, but gradation will.

Do you shoot RAW+Jpeg? Again, if the camera is applying noise reduction to the RAW all you'd need to do is turn it down in post. I've seen some RAWs appear on my computer with suggested corrections from the camera but these can always be overrided by the user. I've never ever heard of a RAW that has a fixed noise reduction that can't be changed. There'd be a huge uproar if that were the case.

So, me being good anon, did some research and you're both right...

Modern cams save a lot of postprocessing data into raws. Lens corrections, crop, highlight/shadow control, sharpness, saturation, sharpness, contrast, even art filters are saved on raw itself. I believe everything is just superimposed on actual raw data that stays untouched. The confusion starts because raw processing programs ditch most of this when displaying images. In fact, every raw processor or viewer, except the one from manufacturer, will not show everything. What you see vary a lot. Raw editors ignore most, they're designed to work with raw, so everything else is just unneeded junk to them. But looking at same raw in some other viewer, you'll see unmistakable differences.
Camera Raw keeps lens corrections, crop, and gradation (probably overlook), and ditches everything else, so it appears nothing is saved. Also checked Capture One, Affinity Photo and Rawtherapee, same story. Try it on FastStone image viewer, and it will show noise reduction on raws! It'll ignore crop and some other stuff, it's shitty raw viewer, but you get the point.

Yes, different programs interpret RAWs differently. We all know that. It's built into their individual raw reading engines. The point is none of those changes are permanent or "imposed on top of the raw", they're literally part of the raw file itself and you choose what you do or do not want. You can even turn off the lens profile or use a completely different lens profile if you wish. A raw file is just data to be interpreted by a computer, there's no image there per se. That's why there's so much freedom to do what you want with them. Fuji is the same, they can't force changes onto a raw or strongarm Capture One or Lightroom to show certain things. It's up to the program and the user what they want.

Sure, you can embed settings and metadata into the raw file, but the actual raw data is always available. That's the definition of a raw file, it's the raw sensor data.

It would be like saying a book that came with a bookmark inserted half way through cut out half the content.
